Generations Incorporated works toward the day when all children are proficient in literacy when they enter the fourth grade. Currently, in Boston and across America, 65% of 4th grade students are not proficient. And this problem creates a downward spiral which frequently results in dropping out of school, low wages, and other serious social problems.
We are unique in that we engage hundreds of older adults to serve as literacy volunteers for children in kindergarten through third grade. This population is one of the fastest growing resources in the nation and has the time and talent for meaningful service to children.
We are a proud affiliate of AARP Experience Corps, a national program that helps young students learn to read by engaging older adults to help.
The Board of Directors of Generations Incorporated is responsible for the development and implementation of organizational policy and strategic direction, ensuring the financial and ethical health of the organization, and fundraising.
The Board meets six times per year during alternate months on the second Monday evening of the month.
Each board member is expected to serve on at least one standing committee.
Additionally, each board member is expected to make a financial contribution that is personally meaningful.
We seek three new board members that have one or more of the following qualifications:
Ability to connect to business leaders and individuals with wealth and/or influence
Experience with early education policy
Board members of Generations Incorporated enjoy participating in the ability to not only make change within our organization but within our community. Our program produces impressive results for young children as well as the older adults who serve them.
All board members have the opportunity to expand their personal and professional networks.
We are one of the largest and most effective AARP Experience Corps programs in the nation and therefore have opportunities to participate on a national platform.
We are about to launch our new board-approved strategic business plan, and the next four years promise to be very exciting, impactful, and fun.
