Founded in 2000 and incubated at Bain & Company, Inc., the Bridgespan Group is a
501(c)(3) nonprofit organization bringing leading-edge strategies and tools to the challenges and opportunities facing nonprofit organizations and foundations.
At the heart of our mission is the belief that nonprofits are the best hope for addressing many of todays pressing social and environmental problems. A strong and effective nonprofit sector can be a powerful lever for change — as well as a source of human inspiration.
While the tools and frameworks used in the for-profit world provide a powerful starting point for creating this critical impact, the nonprofit sector requires different and distinctive strategies to produce the desired results. Bridgespan exists to apply the best thinking to the task of building stronger and more effective nonprofit organizations.
We work to build a better world by strengthening the ability of nonprofit organizations to achieve breakthrough results in addressing societys most important challenges and opportunities.
The Bridgespan Group pursues this mission through three main activities:
- Strategy consulting: We help nonprofit organizations and foundations develop and implement strategies with the potential to achieve significant results.
- Sharing knowledge: We share the insights, strategies, and tools that we develop through our engagements with the broader nonprofit community.
- Bridgestar: Nonprofit organizations have greater potential to achieve breakthrough results when they attract, assemble, and nurture strong leadership teams at the board and senior management levels. Through Bridgestar, an initiative of the Bridgespan Group, we seek to help nonprofits attract, connect, and develop strong leadership teams to strengthen the overall performance of the sector.
The Bridgespan Group's values are grounded in our mission.
- Impact: We value performance and results. We set and hold ourselves accountable for high standards.
- Respect: We listen to and learn from our clients, funders, and one another. We value diverse perspectives and strive to incorporate them in our work.
- Candor: Good choices are grounded in good information. We value facts and feedback, speak our minds, and understand that hard choices and difficult tradeoffs are often necessary.
- Collaboration: We work as a team within the Bridgespan Group and with our clients. We share what we know and try to align our efforts with those of others who are dedicated to achieving social impact.
- Passion: We are committed to making a difference through our work. We seek to understand what can be, not simply what is.
The Bridgespan Group seeks to work collaboratively with others pursuing common or complementary objectives. Our initiatives include Bridgestars alliances with boardnetUSA, eBay, and leading colleges and universities; knowledge-sharing alliances have included collaborations with the Community Service Society of New York, serving on advisory boards of distinguished nonprofit publishing platforms like the Stanford Social Innovation Review and Nonprofit Quarterly, and serving on committees at organizations such as Independent Sector and the Alliance for Nonprofit Management.
Bain & Company
The Bridgespan Groups relationship with Bain & Company, one of the worlds foremost strategic consulting firms, has been a key factor in the organizations development. Since its founding in 1973, Bain has combined data-driven analysis with creative solutions to deliver significant bottom-line impact for clients around the world.
From its inception, Bain has demonstrated a strong commitment to applying its core capabilities to the nonprofit sector. In addition to having incubated Bridgespan and committing $2 million to its development — plus low-cost access to the organizations infrastructure — Bain offers the Bridgespan Group staff access to cutting-edge strategic insights, frameworks, and tools from 30 years of experience, as well as access to intellectual capital from the firms award-winning knowledge management system and to its thought-leaders. In addition, approximately 15% of Bridgespans staff rotates from Bain for between six and 12 months, providing a reservoir of fresh ideas and insights.
