Communities In Schools connects public schools with community resources, to help young people learn, stay in school, and prepare for life. Since its founding in 1977, CIS’s documented results and strong leadership have spurred its expansion throughout the country. By 2004 CIS was serving nearly one million children annually.
Like many national organizations, however, CIS struggled to coordinate the efforts of its diverse affiliates. At the same time, CIS’s president Bill Milliken, his management team, and board had a vision of creating permanent institutional change and transforming communities. Anxious for CIS to realize its full potential, they teamed up with the Bridgespan Group to create a business plan for the entire network.
