Job Description:

Brewster Academy, an independent boarding/day school located in Wolfeboro NH, provides 360 boys and girls, grades 9 through PG, representing a community of diverse and talented learners, with a transformative and highly personalized education. Located on the shores of beautiful Lake Winnipesaukee and close to the White Mountains, its 80 acres offer students and employees classic New England facilities and a resource-rich community.


Reporting to the Head of School and working with a well-supported and highly professional team in a newly created position, the Human Resources Director will design and implement strategy, policies and procedures to ensure that the Academy’s mission is upheld in its practices and people. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated track record as a human resources professional with hands-on expertise in relationship management both internally with staff and colleagues as well as externally with candidates and vendors, and success in implementing and managing human resources best practices.


Specific Responsibilities

•Articulate and support the strategic needs and goals of the Academy; manage and perform the human resources function accordingly

•Design hiring procedures that best fit the Academy’s mission and conform with human resources best practices; manage and participate in all hiring processes, leading those for members of the staff and administrative faculty

•Articulate the strategic plan for the Academy’s total compensation program

•Direct salary planning and budgets in collaboration with the leadership of the Academy; complete salary surveys and analysis as appropriate

•Review and negotiate all benefits; manage plan design, the introduction of new benefits, benefits enrollment processes, reporting requirements and appropriate documentation

•Review all leave plans so they are consistent with the mission of the Academy and employee needs; manage workers’ compensation, FMLA and other leaves respecting both the needs of the employee and those of the Academy

•Supervise, mentor and work collaboratively with the Payroll and Benefits Coordinator; review payroll for accuracy; ensure compliance with payroll laws and regulations including the ACA

•Identify and implement ways in which using additional modules of the HRIS software can improve human resources operations and employee services

•Ensure compliance with all laws and regulations governing human resources

•Review, update and consolidate employee handbooks

•Introduce and manage a performance management review process for members of the staff; provide manager training and support; serve as a resource for managers supervising employees with performance issues; document all matters as appropriate

•Provide education in human resources best practices for managers and supervisors

•Provide risk management support in the event of employee claims; conduct investigations and write reports as appropriate

•Manage staff recognition events for service and retirement

•Complete government reports and surveys

•Manage the Academy’s risk by being attentive to the intersections between the Academy’s risk management program, its insurances and disaster response and recovery planning

•Other duties as assigned




•10 years of progressively responsible human resources experience

•Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred, as is a PHR or SPHR designation

•The ideal candidate will be a self-starter with a well-developed collaborative work style and an aptitude for qualitative and quantitative analysis

•Demonstrated ability to effectively manage change

•Creativity and initiative; excellent problem solving skills

•Ability to interact with employees at all levels of the school community

•The ideal candidate will be a subject matter expert, demonstrating current and vast knowledge of regulations, applicable laws, trends, best practices and new developments in field

•HRIS and Excel expertise; experience a plus

•Excellent oral and written communication skills

•Strong analytical skills with the ability to quickly and regularly adjust strategy based on the Academy’s needs

•Must be an independent and strategic thinker capable of understanding the full scope of projects while seeing individual tasks through to completion

•Must be project oriented, able to handle several tasks simultaneously, possessing an ability to prioritize multiple tasks under pressure while managing deadlines

•A strong commitment to education generally and to boarding schools specifically

•A positive outlook, and a sense of humor

•A high level of integrity and an extraordinary work ethic

•The ability to pass a background check
