The Pitch:  Has a powerful story ever changed your perspective or understanding?  We create theatre to open hearts and minds in powerful ways and move toward a better future. About Face board members take great pride in the role of helping About Face Theatre deliver its renowned LGBTQIA equity theatre and educational programming.  AFT is one of the nation's most respected theatre companies dedicated to the exploration of the human experience through the lens of gender identity and sexuality, and is a major force in Chicago theatre.  AFT board members can help amplify the most underrepresented voices in our community, and help create a brave space for our youth to explore creativity, leadership and social change, which has been life changing and saving for many.

General Expectations

Be an ambassador for the mission, vision, values and goals

Serve at least one two-year term

Actively serve on at least one board committee (Executive, Finance, Development, Governance)

Secure a minimum give/get of $5,000 per year

Suggest nominees for board service who are aligned with the mission.

Promote and attend AFT galas and programs and ancillary events

Active participation in board meetings

Qualifications:

We seek members who are passionate about our mission, support LGBTQIA+ issues, believe in the power of theatre, and who are motivated to serve a community.  We seek members who bring joy and positivity along with professional skills, strong networks, an a readiness to raise resources and build connections. 

Some specific skill sets that are appealing include the following, but a passion for the mission is a must, and we find that motivates members into action and they always find a way to bring value to our team.

Philanthropy/Fundraising - We are a leader in arts education and must find new approaches to obtaining funds to support our growth.  We are seeking a board member knowledgeable about the industry of philanthropy.  The primary role will be to provide guidance for the development of annual and longer range fundraising plans, and alert the Staff to fund raising trends and opportunities.

Special Event Planning/Support - We hold an annual gala each year and various other cultivation and special events as well as donor appreciation functions.  We are seeking a board member with experience in events to advise and support the Staff in all phases of event planning and execution.

Accounting - We are seeking a CPA/CFO, preferably with experience in the complexity of NFP fiscal management, to provide guidance to the Board in understanding financial issues and fulfilling its fiduciary responsibilities.

Entrepenuer  -  We anticipate expanding our activities and programs.  An executive or entrepreneur who has led an organization through the complexity of growth would have valuable experience to share with Board and Staff.

IT - Effective use of social media and technology for the purposes of expanding our reach, spreading our message, audience development and participation in programs is becoming essential. We are seeking a technology consultant or corporate executive from the tech industry to provide guidance to the Board in determining our technology strategy now and in the future.

Marketing/Public Relations - Our organization must reach many types of audiences. We are seeking a board member with expertise in advertising or public relations from a corporation or consulting form who could provide guidance and assistance in implementation of effective communication strategies.
