Job Description:

DanceWorks Chicago’s Board of Directors is committed to furthering the organization’s mission and vision, while embodying and demonstrating its values. Board members serve as enthusiastic and informed advocates for the organization, actively participating in governance, pursuing financial support, and soliciting beneficial connections for DWC and its artists.

Responsibilities of each Board member:

  • Participate in on-boarding process to become integrated into the organization

  • Prepare for, attend, and actively participate in all Board meetings (typically every other month for two hours; in-person or remote)

  • Keep up to date regarding DWC programming, finances, management, and Board work

  • Actively participate in at least one Board committee (est. time of 3-6 hrs. per month) -- Board Development, Finance, Public Engagement and Fundraising

  • Make a financial donation in keeping with DWC's annual expectations for board members

  • Support and advise DWC staff as appropriate

  • Collaborate with Staff and other Board members in developing and informing planning, policy, and budgeting decisions; ensure mission/vision/values alignment in organizational programming and practices

  • Attend DWC programs and performances, and invite friends, colleagues, and prospects

  • Support staff and actively participate in Board fundraising and other resourcing efforts of DWC

  • Actively strive to increase public awareness of DWC by seeking opportunities to broaden exposure for the organization, increase the organization’s family of friends, and further the organization’s ability to fulfill its mission

  • Participate in an annual Board self-evaluation

  • Attend and promote DWC events, including soliciting ticket sales and event support 

About UsFounded in 2007, DWC is a Chicago non-profit whose mission is to support the artistic growth of early-career dancers and choreographers. In its twelfth year of supporting artists, including Chicago-based youth, DWC remains unique in the city's cultural landscape, providing rigorous artistic training, support, fair compensation, and career development through coaching and professional guidance both in and out of the studio. DWC’s vision is to be a respected, recognized, and sought-after diverse organization that is sustainably managed and whose purpose, passion, and commitment to the advancement of early career artists is well understood.


  • Strong interest in furthering the mission and values of DWC

  • Ability and willingness to engage productively in governance, financial oversight, and fundraising for the organization

  • Based on current board composition, DWC is seeking board candidates that have background or knowledge/are interested in contributing in one or more of the following areas:

    • Accounting

    • Social Media

    • Event Planning

    • Marketing/Communications/PR

    • Legal - General

    • Legal - Human Resources

  • Residence in the Chicago area is preferred
