Founded in 1993, the VHL Alliance (VHLA) is the world’s leading organization in supporting von Hippel-Lindau Syndrome (VHL). We are dedicated to improving the lives and optimizing the treatment of those affected by VHL while aggressively pursuing a cure. 

The VHL gene is in all of us, helping to suppress the growth of tumors. Those with a flaw in the gene are prone to develop tumors throughout their bodies and throughout their lifetime. Researchers are racing to identify and control the pathways that allow tumor growth in VHL and other cancers. Their progress provides hope for all of us by Curing Cancer Through VHL.

The purpose of being a Member of the Board of Directors is to support the process for identifying and stewarding the organization’s mission and purpose.  In addition, this position aids with the selection and support of the Executive Director, facilitates the availability of adequate resources, shares fiduciary responsibility for the organization, and ensures legal and ethical accountability.

  • Be informed about and promote the organization's mission, services, and programs
  • Prepare for meetings by reviewing materials in advance
  • Fully participate in all board and committee meetings and functions including the annual meeting and fundraiser
  • Fully participate on committees or task forces and deliver on strategic plan assignments
  • Hold self and others accountable for delivering on commitments
  • Serve as a mentor for new board members
  • Make a personal financial contribution to the organization that is personally significant and support generating contributions from other sources
  • Be familiar with and follow all policies including conflict of interest and confidentiality
  • Identify potential board members and actively support the recruitment process
  • Direct all inquiries and requests to the Executive Director, not staff
  • Proactively assist the board in carrying out its fiduciary responsibilities by reviewing the organization's monthly and annual financial statements and sharing any concerns or suggestions regarding the financial health of the organization
  • Respond and take action on board decisions and activities in a timely manner (i.e., approval of minutes and/or other decisions, responding to communications, etc.)
