About SMASH

 

SMASH Academy, a year-round STEM-focused academic program that serves underrepresented high school students, has been described by US News and World Report as "Perhaps the most ambitious program to encourage African American and Latino students in STEM fields". Now in its 16th year, SMASH Academy is scaling through an ambitious expansion strategy to achieve national impact. 

A research-based organization, SMASH informs and leverages research projects examining inequity in access and opportunity across K-12, higher education, and workplace contexts in order to improve the outcomes for underrepresented students in STEM fields. SMASH is funded by private donors, foundations, and corporate giving.

Candidate Profile:

The Site Director (SD) will serve as the founding Director for the SMASH Academy at Northeastern University. The SD is responsible for building, sustaining, and improving the transformative educational experience that prepares SMASH Scholars to pursue, persist, and succeed in STEM. The SD provides leadership, vision, and direction to SMASH Scholars, their parents, and other community constituent groups aligned with the SMASH mission. With SMASH's current growth strategy and impact initiatives, this person will be a critical part of the Programs Team's work to scale SMASH and place it squarely on the map of national models. 

The SD supervises seasonal teams of instructional, residential, and operational staff and is responsible for hiring, training, and overseeing these teams, as well as managing student recruitment responsibilities and admission decisions. Each SMASH site ranges from 35 to 100 rising 10th- through 12th-grade students and 15 to 35 staff members. The SD will report to the SMASH Program Director.

Qualifications:

As the incoming Site Director, you will possess many, though perhaps not all, of the following characteristics and qualifications:

  • You hold a Bachelor's degree; an advanced degree in STEM or education is preferable.
  • You bring at least 3 years of successful experience in program management in education or youth development.
  • You have demonstrated success in working with youth from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds, and you are committed to increasing STEM diversity.
  • You have at least 2 years of staff management experience and are a strong leader who provides the encouragement, coaching, and motivation needed to build a positive team culture.
  • You offer the ability to align day-to-day activities and details in support of big-picture, strategic goals.
  • You exemplify and uphold SMASH's Organizational Values: Focus on Impact; Strengthen Our Communities; Balance Passion and Practicality; Experiment, Evaluate, Modify, and Implement; Be a Strong Link in the Chain; Celebrate and Have Some Fun.
