Mission statement:

The successful Executive Deputy Director (EDD) candidate will work alongside the Chief Executive
Officer (CEO) to execute the company vision and provide leadership to scale the organization’s capacity
and reinforce its culture to ensure Greentown Labs’ long-term success. The EDD will oversee the
organization’s ongoing diverse business operations including fundraising and set comprehensive goals
for performance and growth to ensure organizational goals are met and team members grow and
thrive. Excellent people management and collaboration skills are an absolute must to create and
maintain positive working relationships with Greentown team members at all levels, corporate partners,
member companies and other stakeholders. The role also requires strong communication skills and has
the responsibility of being called upon to positively represent the organization and communicate its
vision on behalf of the CEO. Our ideal candidate is mission-driven and has experience and a network
within the cleantech/clean energy/sustainability industry, and a drive to address the biggest challenge
of our time: climate change. This position will serve as second-in-command to the CEO and will be a
member of the senior leadership team at Greentown Labs.

Position Details:

Job Description:

● Work with the CEO and senior leadership team to implement the organization’s strategic plan,
translating strategy into actionable goals, annual operating planning and company performance
management targets (KPIs)
● Provide day-to-day leadership and management of the business overall to drive the company to
achieve and surpass fundraising, cash flow and other organization goals and objectives while
staying true to its mission as it grows
● Directly oversee the senior leadership staff members responsible for operations,
communications, and business development activities, empower these staff with the leadership
and resources they need to successfully complete their work
● Build, support, and grow a strong and stable team as the organization expands beyond its
home base in Somerville in partnership with the CEO

Fundraising, Partnerships and Members
● Work with the CEO and Strategic Partnerships team to develop, implement and lead a
comprehensive, diversified long-term strategy to strengthen fundraising from corporate,
government, and philanthropic partners
● Represent the organization to corporate partners on behalf of the CEO. Provide oversight,
strategic advice, and support on the relationship management of Greentown Labs’ portfolio of
corporate partners from negotiation and contracting through engagement execution
● Build and maintain trusted relationships with our startup member companies, corporate
partners, and other potential funders
● Participate in the process of recruiting new startup members to Greentown Labs

Operations, Continuous Improvement, and Expansion Support
● Monitor the overall performance of the business with tracking, ensuring member (customer)
and partner satisfaction based on operational excellence and delivery of high quality services.
● Collaborate with the VP of Operations to develop and implement plans for the operational
infrastructure of systems, policies, processes, and staff to ensure team productivity and success
● Analyze internal operations and identify areas of process and policy enhancement on an
ongoing basis; lead development and implementation in partnership with the Senior Team
● Lead reporting on company performance to the CEO and to the Board of Directors through
quarterly presentations and updates based on input from the Senior Team
● Lead All Hands and Standing Full Team meetings and Senior Team meetings as needed; drive
Senior Team meeting agenda and format

● Lead and support the team to document and translate operational, cultural, and other policies
and processes to support Greentown’s future expansion plans to new locations as needed

Policy and Staff Development
● Collaborate with the VP of Operations on development and communication of thoughtful policies
that promote efficiency of the team’s operations while reinforcing the company culture and
● Ensure effective professional development, performance management, and retention in
partnership with the CEO and VP of Operations


● 20+ years experience; executive-level operational experience at a similar sized or larger
● Experience in a startup or other fast-paced environment; flexibility and understanding that the
role will evolve over time as business needs shift
● Strong interpersonal and people management skills; experience leading a successful team of
professionals across a variety of disciplines and experience levels
● Ability to delegate, train, coach, and motivate staff
● Hands-on experience owning and leading fundraising efforts (corporate, government,
philanthropic) and experience managing corporate partnerships; especially for non-profit or
social impact sector
● Strong customer service focus; excited to grow and maintain relationships with Greentown Labs’
partners, startup members, and other stakeholders
● Data-driven approach: drives data collection and strategic use; “systems thinker” perspective
● Demonstrates a positive, can-do attitude and strong work ethic in performance of job duties
● Strong communication skills (oral/written) and presentation skills
● High-level understanding of operational procedures for all business functions such as HR,
Finance, Marketing, etc.
● Proficiency using Google Suite, PowerPoint/Microsoft Office suite, Salesforce Cloud, and other
software tools
● Flexibility to work outside standard business hours (e.g., evenings) and to travel as required
● Mission-driven, strong enthusiasm and passion for addressing our climate challenge, clean
energy, cleantech, and entrepreneurship
