OVERVIEW:  

The Pacific Northwest Chapter of the International Society for Arboriculture (PNW-ISA), is a 501(c)3 nonprofit member organization, founded in 1979 for arborists and urban foresters. PNW-ISA is a healthy, fiscally stable organization with a dedicated Board poised to upscale programs and further its mission reach: To foster a greater appreciation of trees and to promote the professional practice of arboriculture through education, research and technology. PNW-ISA offers certification, continuing education and professional development opportunities to serve its members in Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho and British Columbia, Canada (www.pnwisa.org).

PNW-ISA is seeking an Executive Director (ED) who is a highly motivated team builder and leader with a vision for expanding the reach and impact of our organization for current and future members, and the arboriculture industry in our region. The overarching mandate for the ED will be to implement a business model furthering initiatives outlined in the Chapter strategic plan and directing the organization into its next phase of growth and sustainability. The ED will be charged with leading the effort to strengthen organizational governance and partner with the Board of Directors while improving organizational efficiency and effectiveness to support upscaling programs in a virtual work environment. PNW-ISA will be best served by the future executive’s professional experience, passion and ability to cultivate strong working relationships that inspire and motivate staff, membership, volunteers and community partners.  This will be accomplished in part by a creative spirit and proven leadership for highly effective organizations.  

 

SITUATIONAL ANALYSIS:

A chapter of The International Society for Arboriculture (ISA), PNW-ISA has excellent reputation and proven credibility among its members and associated organizations, PNW-ISA takes pride in promoting the professional practice of arboriculture.   

In preparation for upcoming leadership change and departure of the long-tenured Executive Director, the PNW-ISA Board retained the support of Loveall Price and Associates (LPA), a nonprofit transitional consulting firm to complete a comprehensive Organizational Assessment. For the past 6 months the Board and staff have been implementing key recommendations from the assessment to ensure a smooth leadership transition. With a history of strong membership, a continuing partnership with ISA, a growing education program, experienced program staff and a dedicated Board of effective leaders from within the region, PNW-ISA is well positioned for growth.   

The future of PNW-ISA will be shaped by the organization’s ability to support the growth of membership, certification, and its continuing education program, while at the same time meeting the needs of the geographically diverse membership base and functioning efficiently in a virtual work environment. PNW-ISA’s new Executive Director will be charged with strengthening organizational systems and infrastructure to support the overall growth and reach of the organization. Effective communication and collaborative leadership of vested stakeholders (ISA, internal staff, volunteers, partners and members who are located throughout the Pacific Northwest), will be critical to long-term sustainability.  

 

PURPOSE AND ROLE: 

The successful applicant for this Executive Director position will possess:  Experience in effective and successful non-profit leadership, strategic management, fiscal acumen, and strong communication skills with diverse audiences using a variety of methods. The ideal candidate will have a core passion and appreciation for trees and an understanding of the important role PNW-ISA plays in the advancement of the green industry. 

The ideal candidate will possess many of the following qualities: 

  • Experienced leader able to positively lead an organizational team in a virtual work environment
  • Excellent management skills with the ability to engage and motivate staff, membership, volunteers and allied industry partners
  • Strong fiscal acumen with experience in non-profit infrastructure
  • Proven organizational skills including planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation
  • Excellent communicatorusing a variety of methods with extensive interpersonal and relationship-building skills
  • Proven record of collaboration and building a strong team culture within an organization and affiliated organizations 
  • Desire, drive and a vision for improving program quality and impact
  • Appreciation and understanding of the professional practice of arboriculture
  • Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable and innovative with an aptitude for technology
  • A sense of humor, while being an effective organizational leader and team player


KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:  

Leadership & Communication:  Under the direction of the Board of Directors, lead the daily operation of the organization in a virtual environment. The Executive Director leads by example as well as outlines the duties and responsibilities of the employees. Communicate and expand the reach of PNW-ISA’s mission through consensus and teambuilding. Foster strong relationships with staff, board, members, volunteers, and adjacent agencies and organizations. Uphold the values and represent the organization in the highest regard in all community interactions. Transparent and appropriate. 

Financial Development:  In partnership with the Board of Directors, implement a strategic development plan to creatively grow revenue streams with a focus on the Annual Training Conference, Continuing Education, Membership and Certification to expand mission reach and insure the long-term financial strength of the organization.   

Board Relations:  Establish and maintain a productive relationship with the Board of Directors through open and honest communication, and by supplying the information, tools and resources necessary for the effective governance of PNW-ISA. Engage in strategic planning and visioning. Actively participate in board development, including the ongoing training, recruitment, and orientation of board members.  

Fiscal Management:  Ensure sound fiscal practices, record keeping, and reporting are established and executed. Manage the fiscal health of the organization which includes operating within the approved budget, ensuring maximum resource utilization, and maintenance of the organization in a positive financial position.

Program and Organizational Management:  Develop, communicate and implement an annual operating plan in support of the strategic plan including a strategy to leverage technology to meet the increasing demands of a growing continuing education program. Make course corrections as necessary ensuring day-to-day operations are of high quality, relevant and efficient.  

Staff Development and Supervision:  Direct all Human Resource policies and procedures. Provide leadership, staff development and supervision, aligning staff assignments to maximize member benefits and ensure goals of the PNW-ISA are achieved. Direct Reports: Education Program Manager (1.0 FTE), Education Program Coordinator (0.75 FTE), and Administrative Assistant (0.80 FTEI). Total supervision of 2.55 FTE.

Qualifications:

REQUIRED CRITERIA: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Experience in non-profit leadership
  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible management experience

DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

  • Working knowledge of the Green Industry
  • CAE (Certified Association Executive) certification
