City Year San José/Silicon Valley (CY SJ/SV) was founded in 1995. Now in its twenty-fifth year, CY SJ/SV recruits, trains and deploys 120 AmeriCorps Members to serve in its 14 elementary, middle, and high schools positively impacting over 8,000 students.
Fueled by national service, City Year partners with public schools in high-need communities to prepare students with the skills and mindsets they need to thrive in school and in life. Diverse teams of City Year AmeriCorps members serve full-time as tutors, mentors, and role models, providing research-based student, classroom, and whole school supports to help students stay in school and on track to graduate from high school, ready for college and career success. CY SJ/SV is poised for programmatic and financial growth given its unique location in the capital of innovation and entrepreneurship. As part of that growth effort, CY SJ/SV is looking to fill the role of Managing Director, Development (MDD). Reporting to the Executive Director, as a member of the site’s Senior Leadership Team, the MDD will lead a team of seven and is responsible for developing and implementing the fundraising strategy for City Year San José/Silicon Valley to raise and sustain at least $4.5M from the private sector in FY20 and grow annually. The MDD will develop and execute strategic, diversified development plans to raise funds through grant writing, individual giving, and institutional partners, such as corporations and foundations. The MDD is responsible for leveraging existing site relationships and leading independent outreach via targeted prospecting, conference and event attendance, and other activities as needed to build a robust pipeline of potential funders.
The Managing Director of Development will be a highly effective storyteller and relationship builder who can bring to life City Year’s impact in schools using strong presentation and communication skills that capture the hearts and minds of potential donors and inspires them to support City Year’s mission. This position is ideal for someone who is entrepreneurial with proven fundraising experience, and who is a proactive leader, creative problem solver, and strategic thinker with an aptitude for relationship development.
Key Responsibilities of the Managing Director, Development include:
Fundraising: Serve as an external ambassador, effectively engaging a sophisticated philanthropic and corporate community to ensure strong fundraising success and impact; Lead the planning and execution of large-scale fundraising events with the Development Team, including an annual gala and specialty market events;
Staff Management: Directly supervise and coach the Development Team which includes the Philanthropy Officer, Individual Giving Manager, Corporate Development Director, Corporate Development Manager, Development Operations Coordinator and Development Coordinator;
Development Operations: Lead the Development Operations Coordinator in the development business process from donor identification, through collections, to stewardship, ensuring accurate maintenance of records and donor information in the SalesForce database; Direct monthly pipeline meetings with the Development team and Executive Director to provide updated revenue figures, pipeline reports, and progress towards monthly/quarterly goals; Identify areas for operational improvements and drive continual improvements of processes;
Board Management: In concert with the Executive Director, the MDD will engage the Board to meet critical financial and advocacy goals for the organization. This person will be the primary relationship manager for the Development Committee or development focused board members. They will also maintain engagement (both financially and otherwise) to ensure Board retention and satisfaction;
Organizational Management: Help shape organizational strategy and play a leadership role in implementing the site’s local operating plan as a member of the Senior Leadership Team; Work collaboratively with other site departments on a frequent basis and with City Year’s national and regional staff. Represent, respect, and role-model City Year’s organizational culture and values on a daily basis, both internally as a member of the site Senior Leadership Team, and externally as a primary representative of the organization.
A successful first year in this role for the new Managing Director, Development will include:
Supporting the board and development team in securing $4.5 million in additional funding to ensure City Year San José/Silicon Valley’s programs can continue to provide robust services to students, families, and partner schools;
Building strong relationships with City Year San José/Silicon Valley’s program partners, funders, board members, and advocates;
In order to fulfill these responsibilities, the ideal Managing Director, Development candidate will be:
An accomplished leader with 5+ years of proven success in fundraising, including securing six figure gifts;
Committed to City Year’s mission of partnering with public schools in high-need communities to prepare students with the skills and mindsets they need to thrive in school and in life;
Culturally competent and a self-reflective leader who understands the effects of race, class, ethnicity, income, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, and other issues of difference in society and is able to lead direct conversations about them;
A builder of authentic relationships with community partners, policymakers, funders, and other supporters; able to engage with a variety of individuals and speak in a clear and compelling manner about the organization’s goals and priorities; persuasive in their written and oral communication skills;
Experienced leading Board members and staff to support and engage in a development strategy;
Experienced managing and motivating a team to achieve goals in a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment;
Able to meet deadlines, plan ahead, and balance multiple high-profile partner priorities simultaneously;
Flexible and willing to work outside standard established business hours to meet sudden and unpredictable partnership needs;
Connected to and aware of high net worth community via local business, civic, and cultural networks (desirable);
An alum of City Year/AmeriCorps (a plus);
Experienced with Salesforce (preferred).
