Center on Addiction merged with Partnership for Drug-Free Kids in January 2019 and is the nation’s leading science-based nonprofit dedicated to transforming how the nation addresses addiction. We empower families to support loved ones, advance effective addiction care and shape public policies that prevent and treat addiction as a public health issue. With headquarters located in midtown Manhattan, Center on Addiction is the only national organization committed to supporting the whole family as it addresses every aspect of substance use and addiction, from prevention to recovery.

We are seeking a dynamic and results-oriented professional to serve as an active and collaborative member of the development team. The Associate Director, Individual Giving and Major Gifts will join a talented fundraising team and will be primarily responsible for expanding Center on Addiction’s individual and major giving programs in partnership with the Vice President of Development, Vice President of External Relations, President and the CEO. Reporting to the VP of Development, the Associate Director, Individual Giving and Major Gifts will develop, lead, and implement an individual and major donor gifts strategy. This position is responsible for leading and managing donor cultivation, solicitation, stewardship and prospect research with the ultimate goal of expanding individual and major donor revenue.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Strategy:

  • Develop an in-depth knowledge of Center on Addiction’s network of comprehensive programs to fully understand and communicate the scope and breadth of our work to funders and when writing proposals;
  • Design, implement and manage donor programs executed through the CRM system to drive individual gifts, including annual appeals and planned giving;
  • Develop, lead, and implement an individual and major donor gifts strategy designed to increase giving with an emphasis on growing the organization’s prospective donors.

Cultivation, Solicitation & Stewardship:

  • Coordinate efforts to sustain and grow the individual donor base at all giving levels and implement best practices to increase gift size and maximize retention;
  • Maintain and grow a strong portfolio of current and prospective donors capable of making gifts at the $25,000 level and above.
  • Work with the development team to design and execute cultivation and stewardship events to engage and solicit donors;
  • Collaborate closely with the marketing and communications team on strategies to support and execute fundraising campaigns across various channels ensuring
  • consistency of voice, tone and messaging across all platforms and channels;
  • Work with development team to maintain a highly engaging donor cultivation cycle and gift stewardship program to ensure that new major donors are developed, existing donors are encouraged to upgrade, and all major donors benefit from a close relationship with Center on Addiction;

Prospect Research:

  • In collaboration with the Vice President of Development, develop and execute major giving cultivation and stewardship cycles with a focus on prospect research of high net worth individuals;
  • Conduct and analyze active and ongoing research around individual prospects and current donors, prepare comprehensive donor profiles and briefing materials for all donor calls and meetings.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 8-10 years’ progressively responsible experience and demonstrated success in raising significant income through individual giving, ideally at a health-related or “stigmatized” issue nonprofit organization
  • Proven track record of successfully building (or significantly growing) an individual giving program that generated significant revenue in a nonprofit organization
  • Strong commitment to and knowledge of the mission of Center on Addiction
  • Must be highly proficient in database software and data management – thorough knowledge of Raiser’s Edge is essential and familiarity with Luminate Online is a major plus.
  • Excellent presentation, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office products
  • Experience with prospect research tools such as Wealth Engine.
  • Highly collaborative, communicative and transparent, with the ability to build strong and effective internal and external relationships.
  • Professional demeanor and judgement in handling confidential and sensitive donor information.
  • Excellent relationship management skills with the ability to represent Center on Addiction professionally to all donors, Board members and strategic partners
  • Knowledge of best practices and emerging tools and trends in individual giving, planned giving and direct response
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple projects as priorities change, with an exceptional eye for detail and accuracy and focused on meeting all deadlines and performance goals.
  • Ability to travel 20-25% of the time outside of Greater New York Metro.
