Mission statement:

The ULC drafts nonpartisan, carefully considered, and well-crafted state legislation in areas of the law for which uniformity among states is desirable.  The ULC legislative staff works to enact uniform laws in the legislatures of the fifty states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.  All ULC drafting projects are open to the public and stakeholders are encouraged to provide input.  ULC acts include the Uniform Commercial Code, the Uniform Probate Code, the Uniform Anatomical Gift Act, and over a hundred other acts in areas including commercial law, family law, civil procedure, criminal justice, real property, trust and estate law, and business organizations.

Job Description:

The Uniform Law Commission (ULC), a national non-profit law reform organization, seeks a part-time Grant Writer to join the organization’s staff in downtown Chicago. The Grant Writer will primarily be responsible for developing and writing grant proposals to grant-makers, and will persuasively communicate ULC’s mission, vision and legislative achievements to potential funders.

  • Research and identify government, corporate and foundation grant funding opportunities for the purpose of developing additional funding resources
  • Write and submit funding proposals, grant applications, and reports to funders under the direction and supervision of the Executive Director
  • Coordinate all related information on the eligibility, application cycles, special stipulations, grant application deadlines, restrictions, grant submission processes, including the narrative review, budget development, packaging, presentation, and follow-ups to ensure compliance with funder guidelines
  • Establish and maintain personal contact and relationships with funder contacts, conduct prospect research, and maintain a calendar of submissions and other deadlines
  • Develop procedures for consistent, effective grant application and administration methodology


Qualifications:

Requirements:

  • Excellent writing, analytical, and research skills, and the ability to seek and synthesize information and communicate in a compelling and succinct form
  • Proven track record in conceptualizing, writing, administrating, and winning private and public sector grants
  • Expertise in use of online databases and other sources to locate biographical, financial, and philanthropic information
  • Solid understanding of budgets as they relate to grant proposals
  • Knowledge of budgeting and reconciling financial data for grant recipients and funding sources
  • Ability to interpret grant contracts and agreements
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience

  • Located in Chicago
  • Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Government, Communications, or a related field
  • Previous legislative or government work experience
  • Commitment to public service

Benefits:

Salary: $75 - $100 per hour based on experience
