The Director of Development, Mid-Atlantic Region will lead and manage all major gift fundraising in the Greater Washington, DC market, including growing and stewarding the donor base for the No Kid Hungry Campaign and annual dinner event. As there is tremendous growth potential in this market, the Director will be responsible for achieving a year one fundraising goal of a minimum $3.5M, with expectations for significant growth (11-14% year-over-year) over the next three years. The Director will oversee the expansion of one of the organization’s premier culinary events -- the DC No Kid Hungry dinner -- involving key high-level volunteers in the region. Best practices and learnings from this and other events are shared with peers across the team. The position requires a high-performing development professional capable of managing multiple priorities in a dynamic, high-growth, collaborative organization. The Director must have outstanding interpersonal and communication skills and must be able to work effectively across organizational and functional boundaries. This individual will collaborate with high level volunteers and board members.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead and manage all major gift fundraising in the Mid-Atlantic Region, including growing the Greater Washington, DC donor base and stewarding current donors.
- Drive expansion of the major gifts program including securing principal (six figure or more) and multi-year commitments.
- Support and collaborate with the executive team and board members on major fundraising activities.
- Oversee management of donor cultivation events in the market and ensure that those events are successful fundraising vehicles.
- Grow and continue to develop the annual DC No Kid Hungry dinner and put it on a trajectory to be a $1M dinner - currently a $700K+ event.
- Develop a comprehensive and multi-year fundraising plan.
- Leverage existing Share Our Strength resources and best practices and effectively apply, broaden, and share expertise to support goals and deliverables.
- In collaboration with the Share Our Strength programmatic team and headquarters communications and development teams, collaborate on strategy and content for periodic donor outreach.
- Serve as spokesperson for the organization in the region and enthusiastically articulate SOS’s mission and vision.
- Collaborate with colleagues and peers across the country.
- Analyze, report, and periodically present statistical analysis of donor information to the Board, CEO, and senior staff.
- Positively engage and motivate staff.
- Oversee the success of individual professional growth and performance to reach quarterly and annual revenue goals.
- Minimum of a Bachelor's degree and 8-10 years of high-level major gift fundraising experience, with a keen understanding of best practices in fundraising.
- Enthusiasm and passion for Share Our Strength’s mission, with a strategic vision for development in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
- Ability to articulate No Kid Hungry’s vision and programs to make a compelling, inspirational case for financial support.
- Excellent oral and written communication: a passionate communicator and excellent public speaker, able to present Share Our Strength’s mission and interests to diverse groups.
- Ability to influence and engage a range of major donors and build long-term relationships. Skilled at establishing successful professional relationships with individual donors, volunteers, board members, and staff.
- Results-driven approach to fundraising, with the ability to set concrete goals and achieve them.
- Proven ability to secure principal and major gifts.
- Proven resourcefulness, flexibility, and fluidity.
- Ability to concurrently manage and effectively prioritize a large number of fundraising activities.
- The ability to work independently with limited need for administrative support.
- Proficiency in MS Office applications and database software required.
- Highly skilled at the nuances of working with sophisticated major donors and high-level volunteers.
- Entrepreneurial leader with significant creative capacity and flexibility, who can be highly successful with minimal supervision.
- Strong leadership skills and a strategic mindset with the ability to deliver short-term and long-term data-driven results.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written), including strong presentation skills and emotional intelligence.
- Outstanding record of generating buy-in from, and exceeding expectations of internal and external stakeholders.
- A skilled manager, able to strategically lead and professionally develop a fundraising team.
- Willing to take risks and to address complex issues creatively and effectively.
- Able to travel (approximately 20%) throughout DC, Maryland, and Virginia.
- Demonstrated interest in anti-hunger and anti-poverty issues.
