Kesem seeks a highly-experienced Development Director, Events to oversee Kesem’s national fundraising events (five total) - generating annual revenue $2.0+ million currently. The Development Director, Events will have responsibility for event board communication, cultivation and outreach, sponsorship solicitation and management, event planning and logistics, guest experience oversight, auction development and fulfillment, revenue management, donor stewardship and data oversight.

Position Description

Kesem’s Development Director, Events will be responsible for:

  • Event Board Communication and Outreach. Each of our events is supported by a local Event Board. The Development Director, Events will be responsible for establishing a communications and meeting calendar for each Event Board, and overseeing all regular communication. The Development Director, Events will also be responsible for coordinating Event Board stewardship and expansion - as directed by, and in collaboration with, the CEO and the CDO. 

  • Sponsorship Solicitation and Management. Corporate, Foundation and Individual Sponsorship of Kesem events is a critical component of Kesem’s events. The Development Director, Events will have responsibility for coordinating all sponsorship outreach (either directly, through national or local event board members, or through Kesem’s Development team staff when appropriate). The Development Director, Events will have ultimate responsibility for securing all event sponsors, in compliance with the individual event budget.

  • Event Planning and Logistics. Oversee and manage Kesem’s Event Coordinator, responsible for managing all aspects of venue, contractors, and service providers for all events.  

  • Guest Experience Oversight. The success of all Kesem events - regardless of size - is the successful integration of thoughtful and well-designed programming and guest experiences. Our goal is that every Kesem event leaves our guests feeling a deep sense of personal connection to our cause. The Development Director, Events will be responsible for working with the CDO and the Kesem Brand and Marketing Department to create all aspects of guest experiences and ensure that all individual elements of the guest experience and programming are assigned points of responsibility.

  • Auction Development and Fulfillment. The Development Director, Events will have responsibility for the development and securing of auction packages with the guidance of the CDO. Responsibilities include detailed documentation of the individual components of each auction package and all aspects of auction package fulfillment with winning donors. 

  • Revenue Management. Responsible for tracking of all event receivables and for coordinating - with the Events Coordinator - our plans and schedule for all receivables follow-up. Development Director, Events will champion all internal conversations for strategies with lingering receivables.

  • Donor Stewardship. While the Development Director will oversee all “standard operating procedures” communication with event donors and sponsors (letters and receipts), the Development Director, Events will have responsibility for all personalized event donor stewardship (throughout the year). Because many individual and corporate event donors are Kesem supporters beyond our events, it will be critical to have an agreed upon process (within the Development Department) to assign all stewardship efforts with individuals, corporations and foundations to eliminate any duplication of efforts. This process will need to be designed and managed by the development staff involved with oversight provided by the CDO.

  • Database Oversight.  The Development Director, Events will play a critical role in the maintenance and upkeep of donor files associated with events, in collaboration with Development Department team members. The Development Director, Events will be responsible for complying with all data standards and procedures set forth by the organization.  

  • Inter-Departmental Event Coordination. All Kesem events include integration of college student volunteers, alumni, and sometimes campers and camper parents. All Kesem events involve Kesem’s Brand Team and Kesem’s Finance Department. The Development Director, Events will be responsible for all on-going communication with these constituents and departments (as well as play the team captain for all event internal meetings).

  • Chapter Event Support. Kesem’s 125+ college chapters hold at least one large fundraising event locally. The Development Director, Events will provide support and guidance (i.e., a “Best Practices Training Manual”) to be used by chapters to ensure that their local benefit events mirror Kesem’s approved event format. 

Job Environment:

This is a full-time position. It is expected that the responsibilities will require anywhere from 4 to 10 meetings per week both internally and externally, including with supervisor, team members, board members and/or other supporters. Because the Development Director, Events will work primarily from home, there is some flexibility in the workday schedule. However, the Development Director, Events must be available for all staff calls, the majority of which occur between 9am-5pm ET.


  • The Development Director, Events will work remotely from their home office.  Preference will be given to candidates that reside in Kesem’s major markets (Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston or New York).  However, candidates in other large metropolitan areas (with access to a major airport) will be considered.

  • The Development Director, Events must be able to travel extensively. On average, the Development Director, Events should expect to travel 12-14 times per year, all within the United States. Camp Kesem currently holds two large fundraising events and three medium size fundraising events annually. Travel commitments may include alumni events, staff meetings and retreats, fundraising events and training sessions.

  • Bachelor's Degree preferred; Master's Degree in Business Administration, Nonprofit Management, Higher Education Administration, or a related field preferred.

  • 5+ years of progressively increasing responsibility in Fundraising, Business Development, Consulting in a non-profit, education, or corporate institution.

  • 3-5 years direct experience in project management of large scale fundraising events.

  • Experience working with event boards.

  • Experience directly soliciting individuals and institutions.

  • Experience working with enterprise-level databases; Salesforce experience preferred.

  • Passion for and commitment to Kesem’s mission.

  • Experience developing and monitoring adherence to complex project budgets.

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team to establish strategic direction,  identify and plan projects and monitor progress towards specified outcomes.

  • Ability to work and collaborate with others effectively in a remote environment.

  • Excellent writing, speaking and communication skills. Comfortable with public speaking to large groups.
