The Director of Philanthropy for New Jersey (DOP NJ) leads all fundraising activities to support The Trust for Public Land’s annual operating and programmatic needs of the organization and in New Jersey. The DOP NJ reports to the Senior Director of Philanthropy in New York and works closely with the New Jersey Program Director for Parks Designs and Development and the Senior Project Manager for Land Protection to develop and implement a robust five year fundraising plan that demonstrates incremental growth that can support the programmatic vision for land protection and park creation in this market. The position carries a mixed portfolio with a strong emphasis on individual major gift prospects and donors, and has historically raised over 2 million+ in private funds to support New Jersey’s annual operating budget. The DOP NJ supervises philanthropy staff including a Philanthropy Coordinator and an Institutional Giving Manager who splits their time between New Jersey and Connecticut. In addition, the Director of Philanthropy helps recruit and manage the New Jersey Advisory Board and directs their fundraising efforts.
50% Relationship Manager: Manages a portfolio of major gift donors and prospects that have a giving capacity of 25,000+ focusing on: donor identification, strategy development, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. Conducts donor visits on a regular basis. Makes direct solicitations and closes gifts. Realizes annual fundraising metrics for position. Writes solicitation letters and proposals. Coordinates and implements donor field trips, events, and recognition as needed. Tracks and meets deadlines. Engages other staff members and volunteers in fundraising efforts as appropriate and necessary.
20% Program Oversight: Oversee and is accountable for all fundraising activities in the state, including design and implementation of annual and long-range plans, development and realization of annual revenue goals, setting the priorities and focus for the philanthropy team that includes a Philanthropy Coordinator and an Institutional Giving Manager. Works and coordinates with other national philanthropy staff who raise money for the area. Works with Senior Program staff to identify operating and capital needs in order to integrate and direct fundraising efforts. Tracks and reports progress toward revenue and programmatic goals. Monitors philanthropy associated expenses ensuring proper investment of resources. Oversees donor communications and recognition, coordinating with national marketing departments. Has oversight of donor events and tours. Directs and coordinates the involvement of the Senior Program staff with donors and in overall fundraising.
15% Advisory Board Coordination: Works with Senior Program Directors and New Jersey Advisory Board Chair to sustain and grow the Board, including identifying and recruiting new members, directing the fundraising knowledge and efforts of the Advisory Board, and overseeing the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of individual Board members to ensure 100 percent participation in annual giving requirement.
10% Management: Supervises philanthropy support staff. Supports success of individual staff members through regular communication, guidance and contact. Provides direction in regards to allocation of time and effort and ensures proper training and professional development as needed. Communicates shared vision for program and expectations of each position. Monitors progress and provides constructive feedback. Delivers annual performance assessment.
5% Other duties as assigned.
- Minimum six years of fundraising experience, including making major gift solicitations.
- Knowledge of and experience with New Jersey and Mid-Atlantic philanthropic communities.
- Experience recruiting and managing volunteer boards, as well as working with volunteers to fundraise successful desired.
- Management experience required and demonstrated ability to function effectively as a member of a team, ensuring close coordination and integration with other staff members.
- Self-motivated; able to multi-task with excellent attention to detail and deadlines; and can perform successfully without regular supervision.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, along with organizational skills.
- Computer proficiency with various Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Proficiency with complex databases or donor management software a plus.
- Understands The Trust for Public Land’s gift acceptance policies and ensures ethical compliance with fundraising best practices, as defined by the Association for Fundraising Professionals.

- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Willingness to work flexible hours.
- Willingness to travel occasionally.
