Flamboyan Foundation seeks a Managing Director, Finance (Comptroller) for our Washington, D.C. office. The person in this role will serve as the custodian of funds and assets of the organization and oversee financial compliance to ensure we achieve our short- and long-term goals. This person will be an outcomes-oriented and mission-driven team member who helps us reach our vision of every child having the opportunity to live a fulfilling life.  This position reports to the Senior Managing Director, Operations and Organizational Development, and is based in Washington, DC.

What You’ll Do

The Managing Director, Finance (Comptroller) (MD) is responsible for oversight of all finance, accounting and reporting activities for an organizational budget of approximately $8 million. You lead the day-to-day management of all financial functions including accounts payables, accounts receivables, grants administration, and fiscal compliance. You ensure that Flamboyan has the systems and procedures in place to support effective program implementation and conduct accurate audits related to both our Washington, DC and Puerto Rico offices.

Responsibilities

Finance and Accounting

·       Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements

·       Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets and actual expenditures, considering how our systems and practices are equitably accessible to users of diverse backgrounds

·       Coordinate all audit activity and evaluate issues and trends in financial operating models and delivery, addressing concerns as necessary

·       Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of Flamboyan’s financial status and ensure staff continuously understand how their work and use of resources impacts the financial sustainability of the organization

·       Assist SMD in the annual budgeting and planning process; administer and review all financial plans and compare to actual results with a view to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate

·       Oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period; collate financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and foundation grants

·       Manage organizational cash flow forecasting by working in partnership with the President, SMD and Operations Team; collaboratively assess the financial efficacy of program operations and strategize finance and administrative systems to support program operations

·       Support payroll and benefits work as needed

Leadership and Compliance

·       Supervise the Manager, Finance and Operations and cultivate their professional growth, ensuring they are poised to succeed

·       Support the development and implementation of training programs in order to maximize and reach optimal individual and organizational goals, with a special focus on supporting the success of a diverse team

·       Work closely with program leadership and their staff members, not only to educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures

·       Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization; create and promote a positive, supportive, and inclusive work environment

·       Partner with the SMD, senior leadership, talent, and operations staff to enhance and better integrate finance, HR, and IT functions

Qualifications:

Education and Experience


·       8+ years relevant professional experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting required; CPA or CMA a plus

·       Proven results supporting teams to execute on strategy and reach goals, including demonstrated ability to lead through influence

  • Solid grounding in risk management and compliance; auditing experience a plus
  • Demonstrated experience and success in finance management and sound knowledge of accounting fundamentals
  • Experience with Sage 50 GL system and Concur AP system a plus


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent and concise communicator, both verbally and in writing
  • Proven training and meeting facilitation skills
  • Ability to take initiative and use good judgment to chart a path forward in circumstances that are ambiguous or have competing priorities, and help team members do the same
