Job Description:

Horizons Greater Washington (HGW) seeks an experienced Executive Director to lead the organization through an upcoming period of growth. The Executive Director will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the organization and ensuring that operations are efficient and effective and that staff members are aligned with our mission of preparing students from low-income families to succeed by building academic and life skills outside the traditional school year. 


A successful candidate will:


- develop and execute a creative growth strategy for HGW;

- create a close-knit, motivating, and collaborative work environment for all staff members;

- develop a strong partnership with the Board of Directors;

- identify and cultivate relationships with new funders (institutional and individual) and steward current donors;

- provide a clear vision for the organization and serve as the face of HGW with external stakeholders.

 

Strategy

  • In collaboration with the Board of Directors, develop and communicate a clearly defined strategic plan that will ensure that HGW successfully fulfills its mission into the future. 

  • Identify and cultivate potential partners (e.g., independent schools, colleges and universities, public school systems, other nonprofit organizations) and develop sustainable partnership models to support growth while maintaining/enhancing current program quality.

  • Enhance HGW’s image by being active and visible in the community and building relationships within the education sector.


Development & Communications

  • Oversee and support the formulation and implementation of a diversified and sustainable development strategy that supports program mission and growth.

  • Oversee the formulation and implementation of a data-driven approach to fundraising based on best practices. 

  • Formulate and oversee the implementation of a communications strategy to support development and growth strategy and effectively communicate the organization’s mission to donors, volunteers, and the overall community.


Education Program Leadership

  • Maintain HGW’s focus on providing high-quality academic and non-academic programming that prepares students to succeed and support continuous program improvement, including adoption of best practices from across the Horizons network and beyond.

  • Oversee the process of refining program goals and aligning program design, metrics, and data collection and analysis with those goals.

  • Build strong relationships with major stakeholders, including partner school leaders, instructional staff, volunteers, and parents, to support effective and consistent program delivery that responds to community needs.


Operations

  • Ensure effective administration, including the hiring and retention of competent, qualified staff.

  • Support staff performance and morale by creating a culture of excellence; providing thought leadership, mentorship, and support; and implementing equitable, respectful, and transparent policies and practices.

  • Implement flexible, robust, and cost-effective processes and systems in areas including financial management, HR management, legal compliance, etc. to support smooth operation and growth.

  • Maintain fiscal integrity, to include report submissions to the Board (which accurately reflect the financial condition of the organization), maximum resource utilization, and maintenance of the organization in a positive financial position.

  • Communicate effectively with the Board and provide timely, accurate information necessary for the Board to function properly and to make informed decisions. 

Qualifications:

  • Strong affinity with HGW’s mission and demonstrated commitment to harnessing the power of education to transform lives.

  •  At least 7 years of related experience, including experience in the education sector, with demonstrated increases in responsibility, a track record of effectively leading and scaling a performance- and outcomes-based organization or business unit/team, and the ability to point to specific examples of having developed and operationalized strategies that have taken an organization to the next stage of growth.

  • Unwavering commitment to quality programs and data-driven program evaluation.

  • Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach staff, develop and manage high-performance teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget.

  • Past success working with a Board of Directors; ability to cultivate existing board member relationships.

  • Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate persuasively with a wide range of audiences. 

  • Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to business planning.

  • Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people.

  • Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude.

  • Experience within the education sector in the Washington, DC area strongly preferred.

  • Experience working within a small, entrepreneurial nonprofit environment strongly preferred.

  • Spanish language ability preferred.
