This is a new, senior position that will oversee and manage all of the Sierra Club’s campaigns to address climate disruption, transform the energy economy, protect communities from pollution, ensure access to the outdoors for all and protect our lands, water and wildlife,  as well as the analyst team that supports these campaigns with best-in-class data. The role will have a seat on the Program Department Leadership Team, which sets the direction for the 300+ staff department in pursuit of our bold 2030 goals.  

Our ideal candidate has a strategic vision for turning some of the most successful campaigns in environmental history into a collective force for tackling the urgent threats to our planet and communities, and has a proven track-record of managing a large and distributed team.  We are looking for someone who can be an external spokesperson across our campaign work, a strategic fundraiser, and who has the leadership experience required for managing a team of talented and experienced senior managers. The ideal candidate will be equally comfortable managing internal and external opportunities and challenges.

The National Director will foster cooperation and collaboration across the campaign unit and lead that team in building effective relationships with peers in the Program Department, other National Departments, with associated volunteer leaders and with our more than 60 local Chapters. The successful candidate will do all of the above in a way that embodies the Sierra Club’s values and centers equity, inclusion, justice and movement building. This means they must have  a strategic vision for how to leverage the clean energy transition to advance justice, equity, and inclusion across all Club campaigns while building long-term power.


Job Activities:

  1. Guide and direct campaigns centered in equity, justice, and inclusion that meet the challenge of the current environmental crisis. Develop and implement a suite of campaign plans - in collaboration with Campaign Directors and key stakeholders - that are bold, visionary, data-informed, well-executed, and capitalize on Sierra Club's unique capacities.  Set the structure of the Campaigns unit to most effectively leverage the organization’s resources.
  2. Serve as a member of the Program Department Leadership Team, helping to shape and manage the direction of our $70m+, 300+ team of organizers, campaigners, lobbyists, lawyers, analysts, trainers and strategists. 
  3. Manage a team of senior managers, overseeing close to 100 staff, including campaign directors, senior campaign strategists, a national team of state and regional campaign representatives and analysts.
  4. Fundraise for our $80m+ annual cross-departmental campaigns budget, including meetings with high net-worth individuals and foundations, partnering with our Office of Advancement on proposal development, presentations and reports.
  5. Manage a large complex budget, ensuring we are providing donors a meaningful return on investment, achieving our stated goals, and aligning resources with strategy on an ongoing basis.
  6. Oversee assigned units and direct all aspects of their management, including budgeting, fundraising, strategic planning, equity and justice, and personnel.
  7. Performs miscellaneous duties as directed.


Skills, qualities and competencies:

We will be looking for the ideal candidate with the right mix of the following skills, qualities and competencies:

  • Exemplary track record as an executive director, senior manager, National Campaign Director, or comparable position in a grassroots advocacy organization, which includes substantial experience developing strategy, leading large teams, managing senior staff, planning and managing multiple interconnected campaigns, and raising/managing a large complex 7+ figure budget. 
  • Understanding of environmental, climate, and social justice issues and how they relate to each other. Demonstrated ability to design and implement strategies that operate at the intersections of the environment and marginalized communities (e.g. race, gender, and class.) Experience cultivating and maintaining just, accountable partnerships, especially with organizations led by those most impacted by the crises we seek to remedy.
  • Understanding of how power, privilege, and oppression manifest at the individual, interpersonal, institutional, and cultural levels. Personal commitment to learning and growth, especially around equity. Skillful at managing individuals and leading teams with a diversity of identities and skill sets to contribute at their highest level. Proficient at proactively surfacing and navigating conflict in a generative, equitable way.
  • Track record of winning successful campaigns at the national level that made the impossible inevitable, delivering short term victories and built long term power. Experience and knowledge of different campaign and organizing models such as distributed campaigning, momentum-based and structural campaigns, mass mobilization, grassroots power and movement building, with a strategic vision for how these models together leverage Sierra Club resources and advance transformational outcomes.
  • Ability to serve as Media/public spokesperson (including TV, print, social media, conferences and other venues that help shape public opinion and complement campaign goals) and represent the organization in venues with key decision-makers (including elected officials at all levels, their senior staffers, movement leaders and tribal partners and C-suite executives in the energy and lands businesses).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of environmental issues and an in depth understanding of privilege and how race, gender, class intersect with environmental work. Demonstrated experience coaching others in this analysis.
  • Proven fundraising and donor stewardship skills.
  • An emotionally intelligent, values and results-driven leader who can inspire staff and volunteers at all levels, collaborate within and across departments, and provide feedback and coaching to support the achievement of our complex goals.
  • Understanding of and commitment to progressive environmental politics, social justice, and the Sierra Club’s mission.
  • Ability to build and maintain trust with Program Department Leadership Team and leaders across the organization, while cultivating reciprocal and trusting relationships with staff and volunteers in their teams.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time.

Strong candidates will bring the following characteristics and/or experience:

  • Proven ability to integrate cutting edge data management and digital tools to inform strategy and track progress.
  • Demonstrated experience in significant change management processes that required building buy-in and leading across a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment, across geographies, and with different types of volunteer and staff structures, exercising effective judgment in challenging situations and remaining calm under pressure.
  • A positive energy and good humor that engenders enthusiasm and collaboration.


Salary range $185,000 to $200,000 dependent on work location and experience

The Sierra Club offers competitive salary package commensurate with skills and experience plus excellent benefits that include medical, dental, and vision coverage, and a retirement savings 401(k) plan.

This is a category 2 exempt position.
