About the Foundation - 

Founded by Susan and the late James B. McClatchy in 1994, the Central Valley Foundation (CVF) is organized to advance English Learner students, promote First Amendment awareness, especially in the freedoms of speech and the press, and to improve life in one of the country’s most diverse, culturally rich, and economically viable regions, California’s Central Valley.

Despite these assets, the Central Valley faces many critical challenges requiring significant resources. The pressing nature of these challenges is compelling: they should be addressed sooner rather than later. In response to this reality, the Board of Directors has decided to increase its annual grantmaking, with plans to invest all CVF’s assets in the next decade or so. This decision reflects a commitment to English Learners in our communities and to the First Amendment. As such, CVF is entering an exciting time in its life-cycle and is looking for dedicated and qualified people with integrity to honor this vision and join the Foundation on this journey.

Learning and Communications Associate - Job Description

The Learning and Communications Associate (LCA) is responsible for coordinating the systems that facilitate CVF’s grantmaking and communicating their impact. As a key backbone position for the Foundation, the LCA will be instrumental in building two main areas:

  1. Administering the grants management system that aggregates the Foundation’s grants information and produces valuable data and information to help drive stories about the Foundation’s reach in the Central Valley; and
  2. Chronicling the Foundation’s impact to help build CVF’s brand across print, video, and digital platforms

The Foundation is seeking a dynamic team player and resourceful implementer who has bridged relevant information with a communications strategy, helping to plan and coordinate information and data to drive unique stories, work collaboratively with staff, key community stakeholders, and influencers to raise awareness about the communities, individuals, and systems CVF impacts.

The ideal candidate will have similar experiences working in communications and marketing at a foundation or at a community-based or like organization. The candidate will:

This position will represent the Foundation and will reflect the diverse backgrounds and talents of the people and communities CVF serves. Coordinates, administers, plans and executes Foundation systems that

        support CVF’s strategic initiatives, grantmaking, and leadership

       translate CVF’s collective impact from its grantmaking data, research, information, and learnings to drive a communications strategy

        shape CVF’s brand identity

Under direction from the CEO and in partnership with program staff, board, and others, the Learning and Communications Associate will be a thoughtful colleague and Foundation asset to plan and operate the learning and communications efforts for CVF.

Systems responsibilities

       Administer the online grants platform to gather data and information and be CVF’s power-user and community resource

o   Receive grant applications

o   Assist grant reviews

o   Manage grant information and data to produce myriad reports and inform the Foundation of trends and other key indicators

o   Interface with the public- such as grant applicants, grantees, funders, media, board members, other stakeholders - to manage grant information

        Manage communications and contacts databases

       Comfortable working in and managing online Customer Relationship Management (CRM) platforms (such as MailChimp, Surveymonkey) and digital-based project management and workflow systems (Asana, Slack etc)

Communications responsibilities

        Content development

o   Creation of CVF-branded content and assets which may include e-newsletters, research reports or white papers, blogs, annual reports, videos, podcasts

o   Develop and maintain CVF’s editorial content calendar

o   Understand and translate data in easy-to-understand infographics and narratives

o   Assist CVF staff with writing and editing for public consumption, preparation of presentations and talking points

o   On occasion, work collaboratively with CVF project or initiative consultants to translate data and information

       Build and manage CVF platforms - website, social media, print and other digital assets, videos

        Advance CVF brand

o   Develop and implement a proactive communications plan for the Foundation, inclusive of key messaging and audience segmentation

o   Create and distribute press releases on grant announcements, foundation-related publications and reports, board and staff news

o   Be active on CVF and other related social media communications platforms

o   Act as a principal resource to grantees on communicating CVF-funded work in the community

o   Identify external and allied media platforms to communicate CVF impact

o   Analyze internal platforms for maximum reach and impact (ie Googleanalytics, SEO)

o   Meeting, event and convening planning, as needed

        Foster positive internal and external communications relationships

o   Collaborative closely with CVF program and operations teams where needed

o   Establish and build CVF’s media influencer network of editors, writings, marketing professionals, publishers, bloggers

o   Be a first responder to media inquiries


Desired Qualifications

       Experience building and managing comprehensive strategic communications efforts, media relations, and marketing to advance an organization’s mission and goals with creativity and rigor

       Strong project management experience, with excellent writing and verbal communications skills

       Demonstrated ability to act as a critical resource to others by providing guidance, sharing information, and possessing high standards in program rigor and quality

       Proven track record of success in understanding community impact and communicating it to external audiences

       Comprehension of and facility with data and numbers

       Thoughtful understanding of diverse community communications needs and access

       Understands value of diversity and equity with proven capacity to respectfully work in a multicultural and inclusive workforce and environment

       Possesses a continual, fearless, and team-oriented growth mindset

       Works productively in a fast-paced environment with multiple tasks and projects, with great attention to detail and completion deadlines

       Values collaboration and partnership but also is self-directed and can work without supervision

       Shares information, provides and receives feedback and guidance to and from others respectfully and skillfully

       Has excellent and clear writing and editing experience for diverse audiences in a variety of platforms - from traditional newswriting for press releases to radio/video to current digital online formats

       Able to adapt quickly in changing digital environments and be an early adopter to experiment with emerging media

Required Qualifications

       A minimum of 3-5 years’ work and communications experience in an equivalent position for a foundation or similar setting and familiarity with the philanthropic and nonprofit sectors is required

       Bachelor’s degree from accredited university or college

       Familiarity with technology and online platforms

o   Fluent in using a computer and a variety of applications (MS Office suite, Mac/Apple products, Googlesuite)

o   Familiarity with cloud-based Content Management Systems(CMS), Customer Relationship Management (CRM)

       Capability to travel within California’s Central Valley, including occasional overnight site visits, state, and national conferences, and evening meetings

       Possess a valid California Driver’s License

Physical Requirements

       Able to work at a desk standing or sitting for up to two hours at a time; lift and move documents up to 25 lbs; bend or lift to file
