Job Description:

Under the supervision of the Director of Housing Services, the Landlord Engagement Specialist will collaborate with landlords and homeless program service providers to secure available housing opportunities for families that are homeless in the Greater New Haven.

This includes maintaining a landlord database, cultivating relationships with landlords/property managers and negotiating with them to secure affordable rents so that families can maintain stable housing; maintaining regular contact and positive working relationships with them to keep eligibility and housing availability up to date;  and providing information to them about financial and program resources to insure housing affordability.

It also involves assisting with the inspection of available apartments, especially in the meeting lead based paint requirements, fair market rental and rent reasonableness and identifying and developing opportunities for heads of household/participants who are, potentially, hard-to-place, such as those with legal histories, disabilities, or significant gaps in employment so that they can maintain stable housing.

Specific responsibilities include: maintaining accurate and up to date documentation for all cases and services provided on the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) and completing monthly written reports summarizing landlord engagement and placement activities.

Qualifications:

·         Bachelor’s degree in social work, human services, or a related field.

·         Excellent communication, listening, mediation and writing skills.

·         Possess strong organizational skills with ability to meet a demanding workload

·         Knowledge and understanding of Tenant’s Rights.

·         Knowledge of community resources, social service agencies and homeless population.

·         Experience working with particular target populations, including persons experiencing homelessness.

·         Demonstrated success working with diverse populations in low-income neighborhoods.

·         Experience with computer and knowledge of Microsoft Office.

·        Ability to speak Spanish  is an added asset, but not required. 

·         Demonstrated success developing and managing strategic partnerships.

·         Ability to build client rapport while maintaining professional boundaries.

·         Ability to work independently and cooperatively with a team and service providers.

·         Strong interpersonal and time management skills.

·         Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Benefits:

Because this is a part time position, the standard benefits of unemployment  and workers' compensation and Federal Insurance Compensations Act (FICA) will be available.

Less than $60k
