Breakthrough Schools is a nationally recognized network that was rated the best CMO network in Ohio by the 2017 CREDO study at Stanford University. Breakthrough Schools originated as a commitment to increase educational options for Cleveland families. In 2009, three of Cleveland’s top stand-alone public charter schools discovered the challenges of operating individually and decided that sharing administrative functions would help them operate more efficiently and serve more students. As a result, they formed Breakthrough Schools, a charter management organization, in 2010 with the mission to develop a growing network of distinctive school options that prepare Cleveland area students for success in life.
Breakthrough manages core administrative responsibilities including human resources, finance, information technology, facilities, student recruitment, and marketing for schools within the network. Next school year, Breakthrough Schools will serve more than 3,600 K-8 students and is committed to setting them on an early pathway to lifelong success in school, college, and career.

The Head of Schools (HOS) is responsible for the overall quality of school programming and maintains a laser-focus on continually increasing the number of students who thrive in Breakthrough Schools and achieve academic excellence. The HOS pursues this work through excellent management and development of the Managing Director of Schools and School Principals. The HOS drives collaboration cross-organizationally with other operations, technology, talent, curriculum, and finance leaders. The HOS reports to the Chief Academic Officer and serves as an integral member of the Breakthrough Schools academic leadership team, which is responsible for driving the overall direction and strategy for all Breakthrough Schools programming.
The ideal candidate for Breakthrough’s Head of School will be:
An experienced managerial leader who can comfortably step into the role of leading a team of Managing Directors of Schools and 1-3 Principals (as needed). This includes all aspects of team development for both direct reports, and those under their leadership.
A collaborator and a thought leader, who will work closely with several key decision makers including: 1) the Chief Academic Officer and Talent Team to lead the implementation of Breakthrough’s talent strategy; 2) Managing Directors of Schools and Academic Management Team members to implement academic priorities; and 3) Principals to develop and implement long-term plans for curriculum, assessment, and school improvement.
An educational and academic leader with direct influence over the long-term planning and design for schools. More immediate impact will take place in the form of supporting principals with their plans for improvement of instruction and school culture through academic program analysis and progress monitoring.
Key Responsibilities of the Head of Schools include:
Creating and executing a strategic vision for Breakthrough’s academic and school culture models that is flexible and sustainable;
Leading key stakeholders to develop, maintain, implement, and continuously improve an integrated vision of academic rigor, school (student and staff) culture, and non-instructional focus areas of all schools;
Monitoring and adjusting academic systems (i.e., curriculum, instructional coaching, data, staffing structures) as needed to ensure consistent achievement across schools in Humanities, STEM, and Student Services;
Creating, refining and driving systems to develop Breakthrough’s leadership pipeline, from emerging leaders to instructional leaders, assistant principals, and school leaders to ensure capacity for succession across leadership roles;
Executing clear talent management strategies to promote the hiring, development, and retention of direct reports and their teams;
In order to fulfill these responsibilities, the ideal Head of Schools candidate will have:
Demonstrated enthusiasm and commitment to the vision, mission, and values.
Experience leading and delivering great results through others.
Excellent interpersonal capability between all constituents: courteous, professional, and helpful; able to handle sensitive and confidential situations.
The ability to effectively and collaboratively work and interact with individuals at all levels of the organization and from all different backgrounds.
Demonstrated a commitment to investing in one's own cultural competence while also promoting a culture that is diverse and inclusive.
Analytical problem solving and problem resolution skills at both a strategic and functional level.
A track record of improving and promoting quality and demonstrating accuracy and thoroughness; driven to research, evaluate and implement best practices.
Experience working with large amounts of data, including data interpretation, error detection, and preparation of reports.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
This position offers a competitive salary range of $115,000 - $130,000, as well as a robust benefits package including a 14% employer contribution to the state retirement plan. More details can be provided upon request.
