Position Summary:         

PLAN of Massachusetts and Rhode Island, Inc. (PLAN), seeks an experienced individual to build and grow strategic partnerships with organizations, agencies, private sector businesses and professionals who work with people with disabilities. Such relationship-building must increase not only the number of participants but broaden the demographics of individuals and their families and/or guardians. This position is part of PLAN’s strategic goals to raise awareness of special needs pooled trusts as a life planning tool for people with significant challenges, and specifically about the high-quality trust administration and social services provided by PLAN. The Director of Business Development and Marketing is a self-starter and serious go-getter, responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive and strategic business development plan that produces measurable results.

Essential Job Function and Deliverables:

Work collaboratively with the Executive Director and Staff to create and implement a comprehensive strategic marketing plan that increases customers, market share, brand awareness and positive image in the marketplace. Ensure the plan is measurable and consistent with the organization’s strategic and key performance goals. Establish PLAN as a market and thought leader in the markets it serves.

Design and implement effective marketing, education and communication campaigns that increase awareness and visibility of PLAN’s brand and services. Ensure all internal and external communications are supported and aligned including programs, special events, public announcements, digital and social media and other projects as required.

Build, grow and maintain relationships with organizations, agencies, private sector business and professionals who will refer individuals with disabilities and their families to PLAN.

Conduct continuing marketing analysis to identify market trends, competitive position, pricing, opportunities and challenges.

Evaluate results and effectiveness of marketing activity. Ensure project goals are met while adhering to approved budgets.

Oversee digital marketing and social media efforts to ensure desired outcomes and analytics that indicate increased awareness and participation in PLAN.

When necessary, create and manage content for the organization website, social media and oversee SEO platforms and activity.

Recruit and retain marketing staff or consultants and provide strong direction and setting clear expectations for professional development and desired goals and outcomes within budget. 


  • Demonstrable track record of success in similar or previous positions.
  • Capable of self-sufficiency and team spirit in a relatively small organizational structure.
  • Superior written and oral communication and presentation skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, flexibility and entrepreneurial mindset.
  • Experience working with a range of digital and social media tools and platforms, as well as data base and CRM (e.g. Salesforce or similar) tools; design software such as Adobe Creative Suite and WordPress.
  • Aptitude for strategic planning and converting inquiries into leads and ultimately new clients.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented with exceptional time management, analytic, selling, marketing and negotiating skills.
  • Five to seven years of experience in marketing and sales.
  • Legal and/or financial services experience a plus.
