Prevention Access Campaign ("PAC") launched the Undetectable = Untransmittable ("U=U") campaign in 2016 with two advocacy and communications goals: (1) build an international science-based consensus statement to confirm U=U; and (2) disseminate the U=U science through an international coalition of advocates and partners serving every key affected population.

In just over three years, U=U has grown into a global health and human rights movement with over 950 official partners in 100 countries. U=U has been accepted by the global medical and scientific community as a life-changing, stigma-busting, and transmission-stopping fact. It is changing lives and the field worldwide. This rapid expansion is a testament to the passion and power of people living with HIV ("PLHIV") coming together with scientists, public health officials, and other allies to improve lives and bring an end to the dual epidemics of HIV and HIV stigma.

Sharing knowledge about U=U is game changing because of the many ways it impacts PLHIV and the epidemic:

  • Well-being of people with HIV: Transforms the social, sexual, and reproductive lives of people with HIV by freeing them from the shame and fear of sexual transmission to their partners.
  • HIV stigma: Dismantles the HIV stigma that has been destroying lives and impeding progress in the field since the beginning of the epidemic.
  • Treatment goals: Reduces the anxiety associated with testing, and encourages people living with HIV to start and stay on treatment to stay healthy and prevent transmission.
  • Universal access: Offers a public health argument to increase access and remove barriers to treatment, care, and diagnostics to save lives and prevent new transmissions.

PAC, its partners, and researchers across the globe have changed the narrative about living with HIV by building an international consensus and coalition unequivocally supporting the revolutionary fact of U=U. Now, PAC's primary focus is to work with its partners to ensure that message is communicated accurately and effectively to PLHIV, healthcare providers, policymakers, and the public. In 2020, PAC will launch the next phase of the U=U campaign to engage and support more PLHIV activists and to integrate the U=U public health argument in US and global treatment advocacy.

PAC and U=U have been featured extensively in international and national media outlets including CBS Evening News, New York Times, CNN, U.S. News & World Report, Washington Post, The Guardian, The Telegraph, Bhekisisa, China Global Television as well as many LGBTQ+, HIV/AIDS and niche media outlets. PAC has been sourced frequently in the field's top medical journals including The Lancet and JAMA. PAC's website is the go-to source for U=U, sourced by hundreds of media outlets, research journals, NGOs, online apps, and other information providers. It is an invaluable repository of extensive research and communications resources and includes an interactive community partnership map which has helped advocates find and build coalitions.

U=U is the frontier of HIV communications, and PAC is the leading authority on U=U. In 2020, PAC's communications resources and outreach will evolve to reflect this important prominent and public position.

The Chief of Global Communications (CGC) is a critical senior global leadership position responsible for building a new communications function and team to oversee PAC's communications work with domestic and international partners. Working closely with the PAC senior leadership team and ambassadors, and in collaboration with U=U partners, the CGC will develop and implement PAC's new communications strategy. The communications team will create, curate, and share outstanding U=U resources to support and expand U=U's growing network and build upon the movement's success disseminating the U=U science worldwide.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop and implement PAC's communications and brand strategy
  • Recruit and engage an exceptional and diverse communications team
  • Upgrade and oversee external communications including website, newsletters, blogs and social media
  • Integrate the U=U public health argument into existing PAC communications to improve access and remove barriers to treatment and care
  • Collaborate with PAC's leadership team to engage and support U=U's growing global PLHIV network
  • Direct the development of multilingual, customizable and downloadable communications and advocacy resources and facilitate sharing of resources among partners and the public
  • Support PAC's leadership team on external communications to stakeholders including funders, partners, public health officials and health ministries
  • Conduct media outreach with U=U partners, spokespeople and sponsors
  • Supervise live activations with partners, sponsors and high-profile spokespeople
  • Oversee speaking engagements and tours in key markets in the U.S. and abroad
  • Liaise with the producers of the U=U documentary
  • Celebrate the U=U community as it continues to make history worldwide


  • Candidates for this position must have a clear vision and passion for supporting the U=U movement as it continues to surge forward. Successful candidates will possess the following experiences, skills and traits:
  • 10+ years in the communications field (digital and traditional); experience working in the U.S. and global
  • HIV/AIDS response or public health sectors strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated success in developing and executing earned media strategies
  • Superb writing, public speaking and presentation skills
  • Comfort in stewarding relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders including researchers, high-level government and public health officials, funders, journalists and community
  • Experience building and managing a high-performing and diverse team
  • Proficiency with communications technologies
  • Adept at handling challenging and controversial topics
  • Passion for systems change and disruptive innovation
  • Ability to thrive with a significant amount of autonomy in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment
  • Sex positivity and a sense of humor


Flexible (NYC, DC or London preferred, but not required). Regardless of where the CGC calls home, extensive global travel (up to 50%) will be required.
