Job Description:

Content Creator

The HOW Institute for Society is seeking a Content Creator to come join our growing team. The ideal candidate will find deep resonance with the HOW philosophy and be committed to our mission of building and nurturing a culture of moral leadership, principled decision-making and values-based behavior that enables individuals and institutions to meet the profound social, economic, and technological changes of the 21st Century to elevate humanity.

The HOW Institute for Society is dedicated to building a world that is rooted in deep human values and noble ideals.  The Institute is animated by an in-depth knowledge of moral philosophy, experience applying philosophical reasoning to modern problems and a belief in the urgent imperative of HOW. Today, HOW we do what we do matters more than ever and in ways it never has before.

Our work builds on seven imperatives

  1. Institutions must be guided by values and shaped by moral leaders.
  2. Moral authority and formal authority must be united to create meaningful and enduring impact.
  3. Individuals must be guided by moral principles and frameworks.
  4. Trust and shared truths are essential to bringing people together as communities, organizations and collaborators.
  5. Business and society must shift focus from “how much” to HOW we behave and HOW we can work together to build something greater than ourselves.
  6. Healthy values-inspired communities are the building blocks of a better society. We must learn what makes them work and create models to scale their success.
  7. Leaders must frame paths ahead as journeys of significance, embracing the inevitable ups and downs, but remaining resilient and committed.

Basic Function

The content manager will commission, curate, edit and produce content across many media formats to develop the ideas and ideals underlying The HOW Institute for Society.
The selected candidate will need to gain and maintain a solid understanding of The HOW Institute’s brand, language, philosophy and core values as your north star throughout your work.  You must possess strong storytelling and writing skills for both print and electronic media, with an ear to cultural competency and awareness, as well as a deep respect for sensitive subjects.

Additionally, a background in and understanding of moral philosophy will help the chosen candidate understand The Institute’s work and build effective messaging across formats.  This will be particularly helpful as the chosen candidate will dedicate approximately 20% of their time working directly with the Founder and Chairman and will need to master his preferred language and approach to conveying The Institute’s mission, vision and message.

This role requires time flexibility – including occasional after-hours work and weekends, the ability to work within an entrepreneurial, get-the-job done environment, with some colleagues who may be working remotely, and comfort with the rapid growth and change of an emerging organization. The role reports to the Managing Director.

The essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Contributing to public platforms

  • Serve as a writer and editor for The Institute’s products and platforms
  • Write or produce stories, interviews, print copy, short videos and graphics for The Institute’s properties
  • Oversee regular updates of website content and work with developer partner to update the site to meet the evolving needs of The Institute.
  • Ensure growth of our website and social media channels by creating content and maintaining a robust editorial calendar.
  • Help frame and design creative, consistent, and effective content and communications, including compelling online content, video assets and marketing and outreach materials.

Commissioning, crowdsourcing, producing and editing content

  • Develop and implementing a multi-channel content plan
  • Commission stories, oversee production and provide feedback/editing for print, audio and video projects
  • Collaborate with team members to determine content needs for various programs and initiatives
  • Work with writers, multimedia production agencies and other creatives to generate original content
  • Guide and/or edit The Institute’s contributions (essays, articles, lists, poetry, graphics, cartoons, videos, etc.) to partner channels

Tracking and reporting on content analytics

  • Set up KPIs and a tracking system across traditional media, web, social, email, newsletters and possibly apps
  • Work with partner organizations to gather data on performance of Institute content on their platforms
  • Report regularly on content performance and recommend ways to increase reach and engagement

Supporting the team and activities

  • Act as the messaging and brand expert to support the activities of all team members
  • Provide support for the activities of the Chairman, the Managing Director and the Board of Directors.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Knowledge, Education and Experience

  • 5+ years of line responsibility for writing, editing and producing stories across audio, video and graphics
  • At least 2+ years of vendor management (writers and producers) with the ability to demonstrate successful project completion
  • Passion for social and culture change that creates a culture of moral leadership, principled decision-making and values-based behavior
  • Outstanding writing and speaking, with skill in telling stories and framing messages for diverse audiences
  • Experience producing a range of digital and print products (web, social, graphics, videos, newsletters, booklets, etc.)
  • Project management skills – ability to design, manage and complete multi-step projects
  • Strong curiosity about and understanding of news, technology, social media, popular culture and social trends
  • Excellent cultural competence and experience working across race, ethnicity, economic status, and geography
  • Background in and understanding of moral philosophy would be helpful, but is not required
