Job Title:        Director of Institutional Giving and Strategic Partnerships

Department:  Development

Reports to:     Executive Director

Job Summary

Develops and manages a comprehensive strategy of fundraising from current and prospective private/public/corporate foundation, and health care and government agencies. Researches, implements and manages new strategic ventures and directions as identified by leadership and the Food Is Medicine Coalition (FIMC) and California Food is Medicine Coalition (CalFIMC). Initiates, builds and sustains relationships with foundations, government agencies and strategic partners including health care providers and academic institutions with interests that align with Project Angel Food’s mission. Manages a $1.5 million portfolio of prospective and ongoing relationships; helps to identify new funding sources and strengthen existing relationships; develops and implements successful institutional strategies and next steps.  Research, program evaluation, project management and budgeting experience desirable.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Foundation Fundraising:

  • Develop and implement strategies for generating and growing revenue from foundations (public/private/corporate)
  • Oversee and maintain a portfolio of foundation donors and prospects for active cultivation, solicitation of multi-year pledges, reporting, and stewardship
  • Identify and establish relationships with foundation prospects and key program officers responsible for giving
  • Report to and maintain contact with foundation donors
  • Plan and execute visits, both onsite and at the foundations, partnering agencies, and healthcare agencies, for staff and Project Angel Food Board members
  • Oversee the proposal development, submission and grant reporting process and manage Grants Manager as required.
  • Help develop collateral materials for foundation and government contracts and manager all reporting
  • Maintain a grants calendar in coordination with the Grants Manager with up-to-the minute information
  • Manage acknowledgements for corporate and foundation donors
  • Proficient with Blackbaud, Salesforce and donor software

Government Fundraising and Stewardship:

  • Research competitive grant opportunities from local, state, and federal agencies and identify compatible Project Angel Food projects
  • Oversee the creation and submission of competitive grant applications and materials
  • Oversee and maintain Project Angel Food status with any government databases and any on-line systems for submitting grant applications.
  • Work with the Director of Programs in compiling and submitting interim and final reports

Strategic Partnership Stewardship:

  • Cultivates and manages strategic and effective relationships with external constituents such as health care partners, government officials, academic institutions, and other stakeholders directly related to strategic directions and initiatives
  • Consistently researches new incentives, programs, and emerging opportunities for partnerships within the health care realm
  • Oversee the submission of health care contracts, coordinating with key staff for internal logistics, details and implementation
  • Spearheads research efforts in collaboration with key program staff and board members
  • Support the Executive Director in following public policy and legislative items relevant to Project Angel Food and coordinates the organization’s stances, positions, and related advocacy efforts
  • Meet all grant and project timelines and deliverables as defined in local, regional and statewide contracts and initiatives

Data Research and Analysis

  • Stay abreast in statistical research, tools and analysis and apply them where relevant to presentations, grant/contract submissions, reports, and communications collateral
  • Work with key program staff to collect client statistics, nutrition, disease-related research and budget information for strategic projects, grant proposals and compliance
  • Analyze and develop new datasets and metrics to highlight the scope and scale of our work, and outcomes/findings (e.g., logic models, theory of change)

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Policy, or related field; MPH, MPA, MSW or MBA preferred.
  • Experience with health, social service, homelessness, hunger and nutrition-related funders in California
  • Demonstrated ability to write clearly, professionally and persuasively
  • Excellent proofreading and budget development and management skills
  • At least 5 years direct experience in grant writing, including capital campaigns, with proven track record of securing six figure grants
  • Background in research and familiarity with program development and program evaluation
  • Knowledge and comfort with Medi-Cal and Managed Health Plans
  • Ability to represent Project Angel Food and its mission before foundation, government and health care executives, program directors and staff
  • Ability to work within a group, work with program staff, meet deadlines and be self- motivated
  • Excellent organizational and computer skills, proficiency in word processing, and spreadsheets
  • Supervisory experience, including managing interns and fellows
  • Flexibility to work nights, weekends, or holidays as needed, and perform other duties as assigned
