Mission statement:

The California State Summer School for the Arts (CSSSA) and the CSSSA Foundation were created together in 1986 and work together as a unique public/private partnership. Our mission is to educate and empower the most promising teen artists, without regard to financial circumstances. Our work supports creative California teens and families as well as the pipeline of skilled and talented workers into the creative industries in California.

Each summer, CSSSA gathers approximately 520 students (95% from California) in a residential, multidisciplinary environment for intensive study in one of seven artistic disciplines from the performing arts to the fine arts. The State of California subsidizes tuition for in-state students and maintains a small full-time staff that runs the application and acceptance process, as well as the summer school instruction. Students are accepted on a 100% merit basis.

As the private sector partner, the CSSSA Foundation gathers and deploys private funds that support CSSSA students and programs. From our flagship financial aid guarantee for CSSSA students to our decade-long partnership with the Herb Alpert Foundation that provides over $300,000 in annual college scholarships, we maintain our investment in CSSSA students and families well beyond their summer experience. The CSSSA Alumni Network is more than 16,000 strong and is one of our most vital and growing programs. The CSSSA Foundation is overseen by a Board of Directors consisting of roughly 10-20 members. The Foundation Board of Directors works with the CSSSA Board of Trustees, appointed by various state bodies.

Job Description:

The CSSSA Foundation is looking for new board members to sit on its Board of Directors. Our newly approved bylaws allow for 5-6 new board members to contribute time, resources and talents toward championing our mission.

It is important that new members of the Board of Directors engender passion for arts education for high school teens across the state of California. They must recognize (and value) the career pipeline into the creative industries. Finally, since we are a public private partnership, understanding the complicated nature of those relationships would be helpful.

This is an exciting time to be a part of the CSSSA Foundation. We are completing a time of transition and are poised to leverage these changes into extraordinary growth and improvement. In this new era, the new board members would possess skill, dedication, passion for arts education, and ability to help the “small but mighty” staff of 3 to 4 employees.

Direct Responsibilities:

  • Make an annual minimum requirement of $5,000
  • Stay informed of our activities and attend events organized by CSSSA Foundation
  • Reply to all CSSSA Foundation communication in a timely manner
  • Board members may be called upon to represent the CSSSA Foundation in front of local and regional government agencies
  • Serve as an ambassador among contacts to foster a larger community of stakeholders
  • Identify and cultivate board candidates and individual donors
  • Help CSSSA Foundation secure corporate sponsorships and institutional grants
  • Participate in high-level cultivation calls, events, and "asks" with potential donors

Those who work within the creative industries are specifically invited to apply as the benefits would be mutual.

Alternatively, we also invite c-suite professionals who specialize in communications, PR, law, marketing, accounting, HR, IT, higher education, and engineering.
