About Forum for the Future:
Tackling the critical and complex challenges of our time – from climate change to institutional racism to increasing inequality to growing public health insecurity – cannot be achieved by any one party or by isolated and incremental changes that, collectively, do not add up. While some progress has been made, people lack the capacity and/or incentives to respond, and many of the solutions that are being delivered lack the scale and pace required.
Forum for the Future is a leading international sustainability non-profit with a mission to catalyze change in key systems - from food to apparel, energy to shipping. For over 24 years we’ve been working in partnership with business, governments and civil society to accelerate the shift toward a sustainable future. Our approach to driving systemic change includes convening transformational collaborations focused on key leverage points, partnering and coaching individual organizations to help them lead by example, and building a global community of change-makers through our School of Systems Change and other educational and engagement platforms.
Now more than ever, we believe this approach is necessary to build resilient systems and support leaders in navigating the uncertainty in front of us.
While we support a variety of social, economic and environmental challenges that need systemic interventions, we are particularly focused on three areas:
Sustainable nutrition: working to transform the global food system to ensure the way we grow, distribute and eat food provides healthy and nutritious foods for all while restoring ecosystems and improving the livelihoods of farmers.
Sustainable value chains and livelihoods: enabling value chains of key commodities and their dominant business models to be environmentally sustainable, rights-respecting, fair and ultimately, net positive.
Climate: making a significant contribution towards catalyzing a rapid and just transition to a carbon positive economy – one that takes more carbon out of the atmosphere than it adds through an inclusive and equitable shift in the systems that materially impact our climate.
We have offices representing the Americas, UK and Europe, and Asia Pacific.
The Board of Advisors provides strategic guidance and support to Forum for the Future US, a registered 501c3, as it grows its impact and profile across the Americas.
Specifically, the Board of Advisors will help Forum for the Future US:
Strengthen its strategy by providing counsel regarding the organization’s programmatic priorities, partner engagement, marketing strategy and other strategic areas
Help grow its community of partners, funders, and wider stakeholders by connecting the team to others in his/her community
Participate in building its profile as a leader in systems change by connecting Forum to strategic media and other communication outlets and platforms
The Board of Advisors is not a fiduciary board and instead provides support to the US Board of Directors (made up of the US Managing Director, global CEO and global COO). When relevant, the content of Board of Advisor discussions will be brought to the Board of Trustees, Forum’s global fiduciary board. The chair of the Board of Advisors also sits on the global Board of Trustees and helps to ensure continuity of conversation and agenda.
Board members are expected to:
Join two meetings a year, virtually or in person
Determine a priority area of support to Forum for the Future US - whether supporting fundraising, awareness building or a particular programmatic area or function
Engage with Board Chair, US Managing Director and/or Forum staff on designated priority area
Assist in advancing the mission of Forum by connecting the organization to potential partners, including funders, media or other strategically critical stakeholders
Publicly represent Forum (when appropriate and as time permits)
Financially support Forum for the Future as appropriate to personal circumstances through an annual contribution starting at $10,000
Engage in a reflective, self-evaluative process to improve Board of Advisors effectiveness
We are looking for Advisors who believe, as we do, that we need to accelerate the shift to a just and sustainable future and who are keen to use their skills, experience and networks to help counsel our organization as we grow in the United States and across the Americas.
We are particularly looking for Advisors with one or more of the following attributes: strong current connections in the systems in which Forum works, particularly those material to our sustainable nutrition, sustainable livelihoods and value chains, and climate programs; leadership experience in business particularly but not limited to food and agriculture, technology, finance, retail, marketing and advertising; leadership experience in philanthropic organizations; or experience as a systems change practitioner. Experience in tangential areas of work that lend insight into programs, such as in policy and education, is a plus but not a requirement.

Terms and Selection:
Members of the Board of Advisors serve in their individual capacity for a fixed term of two years, with the possibility of renewal for a second two-year term, if invited to do so. Positions are staggered to ensure continuity. At any one time, Forum strives to have a maximum of 13 active members on its Board of Advisors.
Annually, the Board of Advisors, with support from the Board Chair and US Managing Director, will review the composition of the Board of Advisors and make recommendations for additions or modifications. An executive committee of the Board of Advisors will be formed and will recommend new members to the US Managing Director and other Forum staff after soliciting feedback from the wider board.
Committee members can be asked to leave by the Chair or US Managing Director if they fail to fulfill the responsibilities outlined within this document.
Although individual members may be selected because of their role in key organizations, they serve on the Board of Advisors in their individual capacity. If due to job changes or attrition, the Board of Advisors loses links to important networks or constituencies, the committee will prioritize filling this gap during the next round of recruitment.
