Annual philanthropic support from individuals and families is essential to City Year’s ability to sustain and grow our work deploying AmeriCorps members to provide supports to students in systemically under-resourced schools across the US, enabling improvement and redesign of schools and driving toward broader policy changes that support educational equity.  To meet our ambitious revenue goals, City Year is seeking a Vice President, Major Gifts to manage a portfolio of Headquarters (HQ) major gift donors and communicate City Year’s vision, priorities, and goals in a compelling way to grow the portfolio and expand funding, as well as serve as a key thought partner to Executive Directors across the network to optimize overall major gifts fundraising  

 

Reporting to the Senior Vice President of Transformational Investments, the VP of Major Gifts will serve as a key partner to our CEO and Chief Development and Engagement Officer (CDEO), as well as the Leader, Site Stakeholder Engagement, who leads our Red Jacket Society (City Year’s site-based individual giving program).  Together, this group will co-create a strategy to grow major gift revenue across the City Year network.   

 

Responsibilities 

 

The Vice President, Major Gifts is responsible for the following key areas: 

 

Lead and Grow HQ Major Gift Fundraising Portfolio 

 

You will co-create and take responsibility for implementation of a multi-year HQ Major Gifts fundraising strategy to grow national Major Gifts revenue significantly and manage a portfolio of HQ Major Gift donors with giving potential over $250k per year, with aspirations for significant, multi-year gifts of $1M to $5M plus per year.  

 

As a savvy relationship-builder, you will identify, cultivate, and build a pipeline of new donors and lead stewardship efforts, meeting with donors and prospects on an ongoing basisYou will oversee research and networking to drive pipeline creation and work with leadership across City Year’s 29 sites to identify site-level donors with higher giving capacity.  You’ll create tailored pitches based on deep understanding of our donors and grant organizations, including verbal presentations and materials focused on City Year’s impact.  You will engage in individual cultivation as well as work with our CEO, CDEO, SVP of Transformational Investments and others to support cultivation conversations. This will include engagement with members of our national Board of Trustees and other existing donors and stakeholders to leverage their networks.  

 

Organize and Oversee Thoughtful Funder Stewardship and Stakeholder Engagement 

   

You will work with the SVP of Transformational Investments and the Marketing and Communications team to create a regular cadence of funder and prospect engagement and communications that align with and leverage other external communications and engagement with our corporate and foundation donor audiences.  

You will use your project management and organizational skills to create a thoughtful and thorough calendar of individual and cohort-based funder stewardship and engagement for your portfolio of funders and prospects over the course of the year.  You will contribute content and participate as needed in national Board of Trustee and national Development Committee meetings, as well as Site Board and Red Jacket Society stakeholder meetings.  

National Development Team Leadership and Collaboration 
 

As a member of the national development leadership team, you will engage in strategic planning and goal setting and work with your colleagues on coordinated donor efforts or multi-stream strategy.  You’ll brainstorm ideas and tactics for deeper donor engagement and analyze data and progress to continuously improve our major gift strategy.   

 

Support HQ and Site Strategy and Processes to Optimize Individual Giving 

You will co-design and collaborate with site-based Major Gifts leaders – coordinated through the office of the COO play a key role in leading a Major Gifts community of practice to promote alignment across the organization.  Working with the SVP of Transformational Leadership, VP of Development Operations and our Red Jacket Society leadership, you will assess progress to goals, share best practices, gather feedback on tools and systems and understand and overcome obstacles in addition to advising and coaching sites on major gifts solicitations and securing and stewarding the ideal volunteer leadership.

Additional Qualifications: 

    • Demonstrated Major Gifts experience within a non-profit organization, educational institution or other environment of similar complexity.   

    • track record of successfully building a major gifts strategy and growing major gifts revenue or proven, comparable skills. 

    • Substantial experience managing a large donor portfolio. 

    • Strategic planning experience and skill, with ability to set a vision for the long term, translate the vision into clear goals and build a plan to achieve identified goals 

    • Social sector experience in education or a similar, related sector 

    • Willingness and ability to travel on average 30 percent of your time as required by the work, for donor meetings and key convenings and other events 

    • Experience managing a pipeline via a fundraising database (Salesforce a plus) 

    • Strong writing and proposal creation skills and experience, including budgeting 

    • Strong and efficient use of Microsoft Office
