ABOUT THE POSITION:

The Chief Communications and Marketing Officer (CCMO) will be tasked with spreading the adoption of principles and practices that make government work in the digital age and developing a cohesive brand in service of amplifying the many verticals of the organization. In partnership with senior leadership, the CCMO will be responsible for developing and elevating Code for America’s brand across traditional and digital communications platforms, engaging and building a movement of Americans invested in delivery-driven government and driving advocacy and policy change across the country. Alongside Program Directors, they will also oversee the creation and curation of content, demonstrating how cities and states can help millions of underserved Americans by delivering a modern experience for government.  


Serving as a key member of Code for America’s executive team, the Chief Communications and Marketing Officer will contribute to the overall direction of messaging for the  organization and its engagement with individual  communities while managing a team of eight marketing and communications professionals. 


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:


Organizational Leadership

  • Serve as a key member of Code for America’s executive team, supporting the development and execution of organization-wide work 

  • Serve as a model and culture carrier, modeling inclusive leadership and collaboration

  • Actively contribute to the senior leadership team’s focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion by acting as an active thought partner and designing communications strategies that further Code for America’s equity work

  • Promote and develop systems and structures that lead to effective working partnerships across disciplines, from communications, to programs, development, talent management, and finance

  • Support internal communications as needed, working in partnership with the the CEO, board, and senior leadership team



Communications Strategy, Vision and Leadership

  • Create and execute the vision and plan for Code for America’s holistic communications strategy to more effectively spread the adoption of principles and practices that make government work in the digital age

  • Cultivate, manage and enhance relationships with targeted, high-level external audiences, including policy makers, practitioners, and other key influencers with a range of backgrounds, experiences, and identities

  • Lead marketing team to develop, delegating accordingly, Code for America’s communications materials (digital and print); video and digital PSAs; website; email; and collateral materials

  • Serve as an external spokesperson and oversee media relations partners

  • Shape and elevate the public conversation about digital strategies for solving society’s toughest problems through effective convenings, working to position Code for America as a thought leader and partner

  • Work closely with Program Directors and other senior leadership to champion individual projects and initiatives that aligns with and further promotes Code for America’s brand

  • Keep abreast of current events and trends to inform the development of content that is meaningful, timely, and provocative; respond to national events in a timely and meaningful way

  • Drive Code for America’s storytelling, engaging with staff on the creation of practitioner focused tools and resources 


Team Development and Management

  • Recruit, manage and mentor a diverse team of professionals and help professionally develop current team members 

  • Serve as an organization-wide model for strong strategic leadership, people management, and professional development

  • Promote a team-oriented culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion; encourage ongoing education and professional development

  • Work with staff to promote inclusive decision-making, inspiring support and participation among staff, board, volunteers, donors, and the broader community

  • Set benchmarks for success by gathering internal input and identifying relevant external research and industry standards

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • At least 10 years’ experience in a senior-level communications management role

  • Demonstrated experience in leading and managing a comprehensive strategic communications, media relations, and marketing program with a track record of leveraging the communications function to promote an organization’s mission and goals, including legislative change, with the widest set of stakeholders possible

  • Experience managing marketing and communications in an organization committed to making social change is a plus

  • Collaborative approach to work and a demonstrated capacity to work effectively with diverse stakeholders across all levels

  • Proven ability to influence and engage leaders, peers, and direct reports

  • Ability to thrive in a complex organization with the capacity to make decisions and anticipate future needs in a changing environment; experience making technical issues accessible and understandable to the general public is a plus

  • Demonstrated experience in recruiting, developing, supervising, and retaining a diverse and strongly performing team

  • Excellent judgment and creative problem solving skills, with the ability to develop new solutions and approaches to difficult problems

  • Expertise overseeing websites, social media and other digital assets, and in producing marketing literature, newsletters, press releases, and other print publications

  • Strong interpersonal skills and exceptional communication and presentation skills, both written and spoken, with an ability to inform, influence, convince and persuade
