Job Description:

The President serves as the primary leader of the Board. The President’s role is  to ensure effective relationships between the Board, the Executive Director (ED), stakeholders, and staff.  He/She ensures DFSNNJ embodies the overall mission and values of the greater Dress for Success Organization.

The President is expected to uphold the organization’s by-laws, policies and procedures, financial and legal affairs, and strategic plan. As a board ambassador, the President acts as a powerful spokesperson to the larger community. The role of President has the following specific responsibilities include:                                                                                                    STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT: Leads the organization in strategic planning and annual goals. In consultation with the ED and board members, the board president sets short and long-term goals to ensure the organization is mission-centered and outcome-oriented.  He/She ensures an ongoing planning process exists for the affiliate   Leads the Board through any major changes to the governance framework, organizational structure and programs.                                                          ORGANIZATIONAL MANAGEMENT: Provide inspirational leadership and direction to Board Members  and ensure the continued development and management of a professional and efficient affiliate; establish an effective decision-making process that will enable DFSNNJ to achieve its long- and short-term goals and objectives. Cultivate a strong and transparent working relationship with the Board and staff to ensure open communication about the measurement of financial, programmatic, and impact performance against stated milestones and goals.                            BOARD OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT: In conjunction with the People Committee, the President organizes the committees of the Board and plays an active role in recruiting, orienting and developing members and staff .In consultation with the ED and Board Secretary, prepares the agendas for Board and Executive Committee meetings. Presides at Board and Executive Committee meetings, making sure that they run efficiently, and agenda items are addressed. Ensures that Board members have the information they need to make informed decisions, especially with regards to budget, audit reports, and material business decisions to meet all legal and fiduciary responsibilities. Maintains contact with Committee Chairs, helping them to stay on track with outcomes and metrics and monitoring whether support is needed. In coordination with the Treasurer, ensures the financial solvency of the organization. The President will work with the ED and Chair of the FUND Committee to drive fund raising efforts. The President will work with the ED and Chair of the Finance Committee to ensure financial integrity and compliance                RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT:In partnership with the ED, the President will drive key results in fundraising; to identify, cultivate and solicit prospective donors and key leaders of prospective new corporate partners; to leverage personal and professional contacts and relationships into fundraising opportunities. Represents the organization at public events, and identifies potential funders, Board and Advisory Council members, as well as develops and manages these relationships.                               

Direct Report(s) and Shared Responsibilities: Provides support and advice to the ED to develop a professional development plan and to assist with client issues and concerns. As supervisor and trusted advisor, the President will provide direction, development, and coaching to ensure the ED’s success. Responsible for timely performance feedback and needed accountability. Will rely on the ED to understand the needs of the community and share feedback and suggestions to the Board of Directors. Serve as a role model for the DFS community and organization (BOD, Staff, Professional Women's Group members, clients and volunteers.                                                           Time Commitment:10-15 hours weekly (estimate only) - Includes monthly Board meetings; additional time required for committee work and other board commitments                                         Board and Term/ Participation:Dress for Success Board Members will serve a two-year term and will be eligible for re-appointment for one additional term.  Board meetings will be held monthly, and committee meetings will be held in coordination with the Committee Chair.                                                                                                           


·       Bachelor’s Degree requested, Preferred area in Leadership, Business Management

·       5+ years of experience in a Leadership capacity leading organizations and/or large teams

·       Experience in a non-profit setting requested but not mandatory

·       Proven record of achieving financial objectives and managing a complex budget

·       Proven track record requested in producing results in either a for or non- profit organization

·     Strong communication skills requested; This is the primary leadership role that will require strong verbal skills and ability to present in a setting of 10+ individuals

·       Effective collaboration skills to engage others to work as a team with a common goal

  • Demonstrates self - awareness and high level of emotional intelligence to understand the impact of decisions on all key stakeholders
