EII seeks a Director of Finance to provide strategic leadership and oversight of the organization’s financial resources, accounting, business planning and budgeting. The Director of Finance will be a member of the Executive Management Team, and will report to the Executive Director (ED). The successful candidate will be a hands-on and participative manager with deep knowledge of nonprofit finance who will lead the organization in optimizing financial and administrative systems across a globally dispersed office structure. The Director of Finance will play a critical role in partnering with the Executive Management Team in strategic decision-making and operations as Earth Innovation Institute continues to increase its global reach to support sustainable development and support local capacity-building efforts in tropical forest nations. This is a tremendous opportunity for a nonprofit finance expert to maximize and strengthen the internal capacity of a well-respected, high-impact organization. The position is based in the San Francisco Bay Area, California. It should be noted that Headquarters staff have currently transitioned away from our San Francisco office due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and are working remotely as we evaluate our office needs moving forward.

Responsibilities

  • As a member of the Executive Management Team, the Director of Finance shares responsibility for the overall leadership of the organization.
  • Analyze and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate to the Executive Management Team and program leaders monthly and annual financial statements, including up-to-date budget-to-actuals; oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting
  • Work closely with the Development Team to prepare proposal budgets and financial reports for all donors
  • Manage financial support staff and outside contractors in the execution of the organization’s financial accounting systems and functions (including A/R, A/P and payroll)
  • Coordinate and lead the annual audit process, liaise with external auditors and the audit committee of the Board of Directors; assess any changes necessary
  • Lead annual institutional budgeting and planning process in conjunction with the ED and the Executive Management Team; monitor deviations from program budgets and provide information/advice to ED and program managers
  • Manage organizational cash flow and forecasting
  • Maintain and improve the financial management/reporting system
  • Provide training to global staff and institutional partners on fund management
  • Work closely with all external partners including third-party vendors and consultants
  • Update and implement all necessary financial policies and accounting practices; improve the finance department’s overall policy and procedure manual
  • Maintain and develop sound fiscal policies and practices and ensure ongoing compliance with non-profit accounting and internal control standards and donor rules and regulations
  • Effectively communicate and present the critical financial matters to the Board of Directors
  • Review and approve Agreements and Contracts

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree, ideally with an MBA/CPA or related degree, or equivalent experience
  • At least five years or more of relevant professional experience in nonprofit financial and administrative management, preferably with an NGO working internationally
  • Proven record of leadership, sound-judgement and decision making
  • Experience as the lead responsible manager for the quality and content of all financial data, reporting and audit coordination  
  • Ability to translate financial concepts to – and to effectively collaborate with -- programmatic and fundraising colleagues who do not necessarily have finance backgrounds
  • Familiarity with generally accepted accounting principles and federal grant regulations and A-133 auditing standards
  • Commitment to policies that maximize individual and organization goals across the organization
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, experience working with a diverse set of colleagues, with an ability to prioritize, negotiate, and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders from around the globe
  • Excellent computer skills, including proficiency in Quickbooks/accounting software, MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint); knowledge of other financial and project management systems, such as Smartsheet and KissFlow a plus; knowledge of both Windows and Mac platforms preferred
  • Strong analytical skills and problem-solving skills
  • Strong writing, interpersonal and organizational skills, and attention to detail
  • Ability to work flexibly both in a team environment and independently
  • Personal qualities of integrity, dedication, and belief in the mission of Earth Innovation Institute
  • Qualified to work in the US
  • Requires occasional travel and occasional work outside normal business hours
  • Preferred but not required: Ability to write and speak one or more of the following languages: Spanish, Portuguese or Bahasa Indonesian
