Today, the Foundations are at an important and exciting stage in their organizational history and are recruiting a new team of experts to support the evolution and development of a long-term portfolio of investments. The Foundations seek to make catalytic, impactful, and lasting investments in non-profits at strategic inflection points. In particular, we support capacity- building projects that substantially enhance the impact and/or sustainability of high performing non-profits. Grantmaking is executed through quiet giving, and most grants are awarded anonymously.

ABOUT THE POSITION:
As a critical member of the Foundations’ Education team, the Program Officer will develop, manage, and evaluate a portfolio of education-focused grants. Current areas of focus include college access and success, innovative post-secondary models, and early career pathways and training. Cross-cutting topics include mentorship, financial capability, and other approaches that support student choice and success. Working closely with the Director of Education Programs and the Research, Learning, and Evaluation team, the Program Officer will contribute to strategy development, learning, and ongoing assessment of education investments. The Program Officer will also participate in programmatic efforts that span across grant portfolios and support organization-wide learning.
As a member of the Fidelity Foundations program staff, the Program Officer will manage a portfolio of philanthropic investments focused on capacity-building and leadership development in non-profit organizations; provide grantmaking expertise and thought partnership; represent the Fidelity Foundations and its Trustees to existing and prospective grantees and other external stakeholders.
Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Identify and cultivate potential grant opportunities aligned with the Foundations’ education strategy by initiating and managing relationships with potential grantees and other prospecting activities
Work with education team to advance promising proposals and organizations by conducting due diligence through site visits, financial analysis, and other activities
Develop and refine proposal requests, and prepare detailed grant recommendations for senior management and Trustee approval
Evaluate grant effectiveness against stated objectives and overall portfolio effectiveness
Input relevant and timely information into grants management system and maintain adherence to grant administrative processes
Draft crisp internal summaries, documents, and analyses for regular updates to Foundation management and leadership teams, and to support Trustee engagement
Participate in the Foundations’ research agenda and strategy development in collaboration with Research, Learning, and Evaluation team
Follow media and literature to stay abreast of nonprofit trends and best practices, and attend relevant conferences to broaden knowledge
It is critically important that the Program Officer be a highly collaborative and collegial team player who listens and communicates well. In addition, the successful candidate will need to undergo a comprehensive background check.
To be considered, candidates will possess a majority of the following professional and personal attributes and competencies:
Minimum of five years of related work in the education sector, ideally with some exposure to college access and success and early career pathways initiatives; experience in philanthropy is preferred by not required
Strong written and verbal communication skills, suitable for internal and external audiences
Analytical skills and experience, particularly in conducting due diligence for organizations and projects; ability to assess information to draw sound conclusions
Ability to multi-task and work flexibly and creatively within a fast-moving, changing, and complex environment
Experience with strategic planning and execution strongly preferred
Sound judgment, integrity, humility, and respect for confidentiality
Ability to move work forward independently and think big picture while applying a keen eye to detail; demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities and guiding investment in projects and systems
