The University System Office seeks an Associate Director, Teacher Training to play a critical role in advancing the goals of DPI's Community Education Unit, which is focused on expanding the diversity of our tech talent pipeline. This includes advancing programmatic and systemic strategies that support both students and teachers to deliver transformative scale across a learner's journey from high school to a successful career in tech - with an intentional focus on underrepresented and underserved populations.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Manage and oversee the implementation of the Community Education Unit's teacher training programs, with a focus on building capacity in computer and data science/analytics at the high school and community college level.
  • Support the Community Education Director in developing the long-term program strategy for teacher training activities, particularly in systemically improving the quality, delivery and accessibility of K-12 computer science instruction in Illinois.
  • Lead and coordinate teacher-focused programming and implementation of activities and events at DPI, including supporting the implementation of the CS endorsement for in-service teachers, as well as workshops, seminars, and other professional development learning opportunities.
  • Coordinate closely with relevant institutional partners across the University of Illinois System and other DPI university partners to advance goals and alignment of impact.
  • Work closely with education leaders in the community, particularly those focused on computing and data, serving as day-to-day liaison to high school teachers and administrators (particularly CPS), education associations, foundations, and others in the community to facilitate partnership opportunities with DPI.
  • Represent DPI in the education community and with policy-makers, including attending relevant community meetings and events, support for broader CS education statewide strategy, advocacy and policy-related issues, and proactive outreach and visibility in the community, including with potential funders and collaborators.
  • Assist with tracking and measuring outcomes and reach of teacher training efforts.

Qualifications:

Candidates must possess a minimum of a bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred in education, curriculum development, computer science or related field with a minimum 7 years working in education, preferably as a teacher or administrator in the areas of computer and data science or curriculum and instruction. Other qualifications include: experience working with K-12 and community college populations, particularly schools with students from underserved backgrounds; excellent verbal, writing and presentation skills; strong inter-personal skills, including relationship building, teamwork, and emotional intelligence; experience working with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
