Central Queens Academy Charter School, a grade 5-8 Middle School on two campuses in Elmhurst and Glendale, was founded in 2012 by a team of educators, parents, and youth advocates with a model that combines strong academics with youth development principles of leadership, self-confidence, and critical thinking. Located in School District 24 in private facilities, the student body represents more than 30 different countries and languages; nearly three quarters of CQA’s 400 scholars (as students are known) speak a language other than English at home, and 88% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
About 25% of CQA’s scholars enter as an English Language Learner (ELL) but achieve proficiency and exit ELL status at more than four times the pace of traditional New York City public schools. Parents are highly engaged, helping the school achieve a 95% parent conference attendance rate over the past four years, and CQA graduates attend some of the city’s most prestigious high schools, including Brooklyn Tech, Bronx Science, Scholars Academy, Townsend Harris, Stuyvesant, and Dalton. The school has consistently outperformed the city, state, and District 24 on state tests in ELA and math, including doubling the state’s proficiency rate for students that qualify for free and reduced-price lunch.
CQA has achieved these exceptional results by combining a tailored and strategic academic approach with a warm, caring, and competent staff that know each child by name, their family circumstances, and their individual needs. Some administrators also teach classes, keeping them grounded in the day-to-day aspects of the school.
All of CQA’s classes are conducted in English and scholars receive more than twice the English Language Arts time as traditional public schools, extensive tutoring, and academic help. ELL scholars are given additional support both in and out of the classroom, and all scholars who may be struggling, or who may need enrichment to stretch their learning, receive one-on-one tutoring or help in small groups during daily end-of-day office hours. CQA provides co-teaching and SETSS classes to support scholars with special needs while prioritizing integration. Parents receive progress reports with grades and teacher comments every two weeks. The school day typically ends at 4:30 PM and the CQA school year is five days longer than a typical public-school year for students.
CQA’s goal is to expand to serve more scholars; they are scheduled to open an elementary school in the fall of 2021, which will feed into the existing middle school. Their long-term vision includes a total of five schools under two charters: two elementary, two middle, and a combined high school, all based on their current model and custom-tailored to serve their community’s specific educational needs.
The school has been deeply affected by COVID-19 and is working hard and innovating rapidly to meet the needs of all students. The school provided fully remote instruction in the Spring, and is currently offering both in-person, socially distanced instruction, and live, synchronous remote learning. One of the Executive Director’s immediate priorities will be helping the school grapple with the COVID-19 crisis and heal from the physical, emotional, and academic loss that it created.
Central Queens Academy is seeking a dynamic Executive Director to lead, inspire and grow the school while maintaining their school culture and spirit, the quality of their programs, and their excellent rate of success.
Reporting to, working closely with, and helping to guide the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will have ultimate responsibility for animating and implementing CQA’s vision and mission. The Executive Director will oversee all aspects of the school, including supervision of the school's strong senior leadership team, oversight of finances and operations, advancement of resource development, and scholar retention and enrollment.
The Executive Director will serve as CQA’s representative to the wider community and its various constituencies as part of the ongoing effort to market the school to new scholars and exceptional educators, and as an advocate with the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE), New York State Education Department (NYSED), State University of New York Charter Schools Institute (SUNY-CSI), elected officials, and local and national donors.
This position requires a results-oriented organizational leader with a high EQ who engenders confidence, inspires their team to work towards a common goal, and approaches the work with integrity and conviction.
Leadership and Strategic Planning: (approximately 40%)
Provide strategic vision and leadership for CQA in service of its mission and lead the organization into its next phase of development, growth, and impact
Serve as both the internal and external leader of CQA
Collaborate with the board, senior leadership, and key stakeholders to provide and implement ambitious, mission-aligned, multi-year, multi-tiered strategic, organizational, and financial plans
Cultivate a strong and transparent working relationship with the board
Serve as a guide, and promote board engagement in strategic planning, resource development, and overall organizational wellness
Keep the board informed of all matters relating to the school, bolstering its ability to make informed decisions at the macro level
Institutional Advancement and External Relations: (approximately 40%)
Serve as an ambassador for the school at all times, raising CQA’s profile to attract quality teachers, additional scholars, and donors
Maintain effective partnerships with businesses, community organizations, and government agencies
Lead and cultivate fundraising efforts; develop new funding sources, deepen connections with current donors, and reestablish relationships with past local, national, institutional, and individual funders
Supervise and support the Director of Advancement in developing the advancement strategy, implementing that strategy, and meeting all goals
Engage and support the board in raising funds
Management and Operations: (approximately 20%)
Provide inspirational leadership, direction, and supervision to the senior leadership team; establish clear lines of communication and reporting, ensuring the continued development and management of a professional and efficient organization
Serve as a thought partner to the School Director to ensure that CQA is on target to exceed charter-prescribed academic performance and progress goals
Lead and oversee the project development of facilities in order to ensure a smooth transition towards a permanent facility for the school
Ensure that CQA is in compliance with all applicable statutory, regulatory and charter requirements; work with outside counsel to address any legal needs that may arise
Oversee “central office” operations, including budgeting, accounting, financial planning and management, real estate acquisition and development, charter, statutory and compliance
Oversee the overall human capital strategy and HR protocol, including compensation, benefits, and bonus policies and guidelines, and establish career paths within the organization
An established leader with demonstrated success in a senior management position, preferably with a charter school
Significant board development, fundraising, and fiscal management experience
A persuasive and passionate communicator with strong written and verbal communication skills
Passion for CQA’s mission, and ability to inspire others to work for and support the school
Excellent organizational skills and operational experience with the ability to set clear priorities and meet deadlines
Demonstrated ability to supervise, direct and motivate an effective leadership team responsible for day-to-day operations, program administration, and finance
Excellent coalition and consensus-building skills with an ability to communicate and work effectively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders including staff, families, funders, and partners
Experience building and working with a diverse, equitable, inclusive, multi-cultural, and anti-racist community
BA/BS from an accredited college or university required
