The mission of The Trevor Project is to end suicide among gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer & questioning young people. The organization works to fulfill this mission through four strategies:

1. Provide crisis counseling to LGBTQ young people thinking of suicide.
2. Offer resources, supportive counseling and a sense of community to LGBTQ young people to reduce the risk that they become suicidal.
3. Educate young people and adults who interact with young people on LGBTQ-competent suicide prevention, risk detection and response.
4. Advocate for laws and policies that will reduce suicide among LGBTQ young people.

The Trevor Project is the world’s largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ young people. We are a non-profit that provides 24/7 life-saving support via phone, text, and chat. We also operate the world’s largest safe space social networking site for LGBTQ youth and run innovative research, education, and advocacy programs. We’ve been saving lives every day for over 20 years.


The first-ever Director of Community Giving (DCG) will be responsible for The Trevor Project’s annual giving program within the Individual Giving Team. The Annual Giving streams include Trevor’s monthly donors, sustaining donors, giving societies, and peer to peer campaign fundraisers and donors and represent a growing demographic with considerable potential. Last fiscal year, this group of revenue streams saw a significant year over year increase from 80,000 transactions and provided an important pipeline of support for Trevor’s future growth. The Director will be responsible for creating a high level vision and strategy for the program and working internally to devise systems and processes to meet and exceed goals. The DCG will analyze data and create strategy for segmenting, soliciting, and stewarding each group of donors, all with the goal of creating a delightful donor experience. The Director will supervise the Digital Giving Manager, and an additional associate staff member as the team grows. The DCG monitors and reports on the success of the annual fund, particularly on their annually defined priorities for each donor segment including retention, reactivation, and acquisition goals.  They will report to the Senior Director of Individual Giving and join a growing team of 7 Individual Giving team members within a team of 14 development professionals to drive a significant portion of Trevor’s ambitious annual revenue goal of $34.5M.

Who you are:

  • Fundraising expert. You have deep knowledge of both the art and science of fundraising, and have a proven track record of managing large groups of donors for ambitious campaign goals. You have a strong facility with fundraising software (Salesforce preferred) and a broad understanding of donor acquisition, digital giving and sustaining-donor moves management. You have demonstrated experience in growing an organization’s annual giving streams

What You’ll Do:

  • Design, lead and direct the development of annual goals and objectives, operating plans, and budgets for the donors in the priority annual fund segments including monthly membership donors, sustaining donors, giving societies, and peer to peer campaign fundraisers and donors.

  • Take a data driven approach to lead the team to carry out the goals of the monthly membership donor program and grow this significant revenue stream  on an annual basis.

  • Grow, retain and upgrade donors in the mid-level program, as well as create a process to identify major donor prospects that are then delivered to the major gifts team for stewardship.

  • Create a set of goals and priorities for individual peer to peer fundraising revenue streams at The Trevor Project.

  • Oversee the execution of the re-ignited direct mail program to serve the revenue goals of the annual fund, particularly around Trevor’s two main fundraising moments per year (End of Calendar Year and LGBTQ Pride). 

  • Create an annual strategy for stewardship for each donor segment within the annual fund, and collaborate with the Marketing and Communications team to carry out coordinated communication with the annual fund’s priority donor groups.

  • Develop and lead new fundraising initiatives designed to bring in new donors and broaden a sustainable base of support.

  • Develop strategies for The Trevor Project’s general audience fundraising programs and provide insight and direction for overall development goals in this arena. Lead online fundraising strategy and project management for pillar fundraising moments, including end-of-calendar-year and LGBTQ Pride month in June.

  • Manage and develop direct reports while maintaining a keen focus on the best outcomes of integration of annual giving with major donors, and corporate and foundation partners.
