Founded in 1999, BUILD’s mission is to use entrepreneurship to ignite the potential of youth in under-resourced communities and equip them for high school, college and career success. BUILD’s unique program offers students a four-year entrepreneurship experience designed to develop 21st Century Skills and motivate student engagement in school. Starting in 9th grade, BUILD students work with their peers and community mentors to develop business ideas, pitch to funders and launch real businesses. As students journey through high school and continue to grow their businesses, BUILD helps them explore college and career options, and assists students with the college application process. Entrepreneurship is the hook – college, career, and life success are the goals. BUILD currently serves approximately 2,000 high school students annually at programs located in the San Francisco Bay Area, Washington DC, New York City and Boston.

Position Summary:
BUILD is seeking a Regional Executive Director to lead BUILD Boston. The ideal candidate is a seasoned, strategic nonprofit leader who cares deeply about young people and can inspire our staff, board members, school partners, mentors, volunteers, and donors to advance our mission.

The Regional Executive Director is the leader of BUILD’s Boston region and ensures excellence in serving our 300+ high school BUILD students in six partner schools in Boston. The Regional Executive Director leads the planning and execution of BUILD Boston education programs, fundraising, operations and strategic planning. In order to achieve outcomes, the Regional Executive Director must forge strategic relationships with corporations, foundations, individuals and media outlets and deepen partnerships with community and school district leaders. Additionally, the Regional Executive Director hires and manages regional staff to outcomes, develops a sustainable strategy to expand BUILD’s presence in the Greater Boston region and maximizes our short and long-term impact.

The Boston Regional Executive Director will join BUILD at an exciting time in our organization’s development. Enhancements to our curriculum through digital and in-person offerings --- as well as business model initiatives such as satellite partnerships and Campus Without Walls --- positions BUILD Boston to expand and deepen our impact in the Greater Boston area and beyond. Qualified candidates will be those who are excited about and skilled in not just improving performance to current goals but also scaling a program and business model to advance social justice.

Reporting directly to the President, the Regional Executive Director will join a learning community of other Regional Executive Directors from the Bay Area, New York City and Washington, D.C. and serve as a member of BUILD’s National Leadership Team, working closely with BUILD leadership to influence the overall strategic direction of the national organization.


Strategy, Operations, and Expansion (40% time allocation):
● Plan and execute the overall strategic direction of the BUILD Boston region
● Lead and develop the BUILD Boston staff, managing them to performance outcomes
● Develop the annual regional plan and budget in alignment with national strategic plans/programmatic priorities
● Working with the Boston Program Director and National Impact and Organizational Learning team, ensure the effective implementation of BUILD’s in-person four-year and digital/hybrid programming in the region
● Oversee all regional operations including facilities and IT, working in collaboration with the national office and external IT team
● Scout and select prospective school and other strategic partnerships for regional expansion, including gateway cities
● Work with corporate partners to create skills-based volunteering opportunities that serve BUILD students
● Contribute to the organization’s National Leadership Team by providing input to strategy and priorities and executing organizational outcomes

Fundraising & External Relations (60% time allocation):
● Working with the development team and regional board, raise the BUILD Boston annual operating budget of $2M, by developing and executing a Boston regional development plan that features corporate, foundation, individual, government and event funding streams
● Partner with the Boston Director of Philanthropy, to develop and implement a three-year revenue strategy
● Coordinate with BUILD’s National Office for grant writing and event management support.
● Serve as the external spokesperson for BUILD with key partners in the school district, local government, corporations, nonprofits, individuals, philanthropic organizations, community groups, and the media to increase visibility and brand awareness of the BUILD program
● Participate in community building activities and attend community events to deepen relationships and build connections
● Build a highly effective and engaged Boston Board to support with strategy, fundraising, and widening the circle of BUILD supporters


● 5+ years of senior level professional experience
● Proven track record of success and executive leadership in an entrepreneurial, nonprofit environment achieving outcomes in the following areas:
o Fundraising across a diversity of revenue streams, ideally with experience in Greater Boston
o Building and managing a Board
o Engaging and fostering mutually beneficial strategic relationships
o Developing and executing an organizational strategy to expand programming while maintaining quality
o Building and leading a high performing team and a healthy organizational culture
● Delights in cultivating and stewarding donors and has successfully solicited major donors at the 5+-figure level
● Working knowledge of current educational policies and practices; experience working in an educational, youth-based organization preferred
● Enjoys the opportunity to work and collaborate in a national, multi-site organization
● Exceptional written and verbal communication and relationship building skills, with a natural ability to interact comfortably with and understand the interests of a variety of constituents and inspire enthusiasm for the organizational mission
● Comfort with regular regional travel; ability to periodically travel to BUILD Headquarters in the San Francisco Bay Area or other regional locations [BUILD staff are currently working remote during the COVID-19 pandemic]
● Bachelor’s degree required or transferable life experience
